Yura Yura Teikoku is a Japanese indie band renowned for their fusion of psychedelic rock and Shibuya-kei, a genre characterized by its eclectic and pop-oriented sound. Originating in Tokyo in 1989, the group was spearheaded by Shintaro Sakamoto (vocals, guitar), with Chiyo Kamekawa (bass) joining shortly after. A stable lineup was solidified in 1997 with the addition of Ichiro Shibata (drums). Known for their adventurous sonic explorations and a deep footprint in Japan’s psychedelic underground scene, Yura Yura Teikoku achieved mainstream success with their album 333 and continued to captivate audiences until their disbandment in 2010. Despite their split, the band’s influence persists in the indie and psychedelic music circles.

Yura Yura Teikoku's sound is a dynamic blend of dreamy psychedelia and gritty rock & roll energy. Their music often combines lush, reverberant guitar tones with crisp, driving rhythms, creating a soundscape that's both expansive and raw. Shintaro Sakamoto's use of the Gibson 1971 SG Standard through a Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus amp provides a clean yet powerful foundation for their music. Effects such as the Demeter Amplification TRM-1 Tremulator add a pulsating tremolo effect that enhances the swirling, hypnotic quality of their compositions. The band's ability to meld tight, rhythmic bass lines with spacious, atmospheric guitar work makes for a compelling and immersive listening experience.
