Zazen Boys is a Japanese rock band formed by Shutoku Mukai. Emerging from Tokyo’s vibrant music scene, they are known for their eclectic mix of post-punk, math rock, and J-rock influences. Since their debut in 2004 with the album ZAZEN BOYS, the band has undergone several lineup changes, now featuring Shutoku Mukai (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Satoshi Yoshikane (guitar), MIYA (bass), and Atsushi Matsushita (drums). Zazen Boys are celebrated for their experimental approach and dynamic live performances, which have earned them a dedicated following in Japan and beyond.

Zazen Boys' sound is a fusion of tight, rhythmic complexity and raw, energetic aggression. Their music often features intricate guitar work, characterized by the interplay of clean, articulate riffs and bursts of distortion. This is often achieved through the use of a Fender Telecaster paired with a Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp, which provides a bright, cutting tone that can seamlessly shift from clarity to grit. Effects like the Boss OS-2 OverDrive/Distortion add a layer of raw edge, while the DigiTech X-Series DigiVerb creates spacious, atmospheric textures. The band’s rhythm section complements this with tight, syncopated bass lines and dynamic drumming, crafting a sound that is both cerebral and visceral.
