A Little Thunder is a Los Angeles-based guitar pickup company founded by Andy Alt, a touring guitarist and former online marketing director for Steve Vai. Alt spent several years developing the brand's patented technology before launching the original pickup via Kickstarter in 2014. The company's flagship product is a DSP-embedded humbucker-replacement pickup that adds a -1 or -2 octave bass signal to a guitar's lowest one, two, or three strings while preserving the organic tone of all six strings through a traditional humbucker. Unlike octave pedals, the pickup uses onboard Fast Fourier Transform algorithms to achieve near-zero latency and offers a patented Low Note Priority mode that detects the lowest note being played in a chord and applies the bass effect only to that tone.
The A Little Thunder pickup requires no MIDI, 9V battery cavity, or routing modifications — it drops into any standard humbucker slot in roughly five minutes. It features an internal rechargeable lithium polymer battery (charged via USB), capacitive touch controls that eliminate the need for additional switches or knobs, and stereo output for routing guitar and bass signals to separate amplifiers. The V2 model adds Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity and software-customizable settings. When the pickup's electronics are powered off, it functions as a passive PAF-style Alnico V humbucker. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top adopted the pickup for his Big Bad Blues tour, and it has been used by artists including James Taylor, Morrissey, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Lianne LaHavas.
