C. Bechstein is a German piano manufacturer founded in Berlin on 1 October 1853 by Carl Bechstein. The company set out to build instruments capable of withstanding the demands of the leading virtuosi of the era, gaining early endorsements from Hans von Bülow — who premiered Liszt's Piano Sonata in B minor on a Bechstein grand in 1857 — and Franz Liszt himself. By the late 19th century the company supplied pianos to Queen Victoria, held a royal warrant, and operated showrooms in London, Paris, Vienna, and Saint Petersburg, with annual production peaking at several thousand instruments.
The company builds upright and grand pianos across multiple tiers, including the flagship handmade C. Bechstein Concert grand series (such as the D 282 concert grand and the B 212), the C. Bechstein Academy line, and the more accessible W. Hoffmann and Zimmermann brands. Headquartered at Kantstraße 17 in Berlin, instruments are produced at the company's manufactory in Seifhennersdorf, Saxony, with additional production at the Hradec Králové facility in the Czech Republic for the W. Hoffmann and Zimmermann lines.
C. Bechstein pianos have a long association with classical recording and performance. Edwin Fischer used a Bechstein for his pioneering recording of Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, and Artur Schnabel chose one for his cycle of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas. Composers including Edvard Grieg, Claude Debussy, Alexander Scriabin, Maurice Ravel, and Béla Bartók are known to have owned Bechsteins, and 20th-century pianists Wilhelm Kempff, Wilhelm Backhaus, Walter Gieseking, and Jorge Bolet were associated with the brand.
