Calrec Audio is a British manufacturer of broadcast audio mixing consoles and equipment, based at Nutclough Mill in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, England. Founded in 1964 as a microphone manufacturer, the company pivoted in 1971 to focus on broadcast audio and has since become one of the most recognized names in television and radio sound. Calrec is credited with several industry firsts, including the world's first stereo broadcast console in 1977, the Soundfield microphone in 1978 — a single-point microphone capable of capturing sound in three dimensions — and the first digitally controlled assignable mixing console in 1981.
The company's product range centers on large-format and compact broadcast consoles used in live television, sports, news, and outside-broadcast production. Notable product lines include the Apollo, Artemis, Argo, Brio, and Type R consoles, alongside processing engines, IP and AoIP networking hardware, and remote-production tools. Calrec's consoles are a fixture in broadcast trucks and control rooms for major networks worldwide, and the company has received Emmy Engineering recognition for its contributions to broadcast audio.
Calrec is a sister brand to DiGiCo, Solid State Logic, Allen & Heath, Harrison, and Sound Devices under the Audiotonix group of console manufacturers. Design, engineering, and manufacturing remain in Hebden Bridge, and the company runs the Calrec Sound Institute, a training resource for broadcast audio engineers.
