Future Sound Systems is an independent musical device manufacturer based in Bristol, England, founded by Finlay Shakespeare in 2005. The company specializes in Eurorack modular synthesizer modules and semi-modular instruments, with a reputation for distinctive analog circuit design and high-profile collaborations. FSS worked with Throbbing Gristle's Chris Carter and original circuit designer Roy Gwinn to create the Gristleizer series (TG1–TG5), a set of Eurorack modules derived from the effect circuit used throughout Throbbing Gristle's catalogue. The company also partnered with Mute Records founder Daniel Miller on two performance-oriented modules, Stumm and Makrow, debuted at Superbooth 2019.
The FSS product line spans oscillators, filters, matrices, and complete instruments. The OSC2 Recombination Engine is a triple VCO module utilizing the company's proprietary Scissor operator technology, while the MTX8 provides pin-matrix routing in Eurorack format. The FIL4 Timbral Sculptor combines multimode filtering, wavefolding, and distortion into a single module. Beyond Eurorack, FSS designed the analog architecture for the PWM Malevolent semi-modular synthesizer and produced the Brunswick, a compact, affordable synth voice. Their most ambitious standalone instrument is the Cric, a fully analog semi-modular desktop synthesizer featuring a three-VCO oscillator section, state-variable filter with wave folding, four cycling function generators, and a 24×32 pin matrix for experimental signal routing.
In addition to module and instrument design, Future Sound Systems offers instrument repair, modification, and recording services from their Bristol workshop in the St. Philips area.
