Garrison Guitars was a Canadian acoustic and electric guitar manufacturer founded in 1999 by Chris Griffiths in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The company built its identity around the Griffiths Active Bracing System (GABS), a one-piece fiberglass bracing assembly that replaced the traditional individually-glued wooden braces inside an acoustic guitar's top. Garrison promoted GABS as a way to deliver more consistent resonance and improved structural stability, and the system became the technical signature that distinguished Garrison instruments from conventionally braced acoustics.
In 2001 the company opened a 20,000-square-foot factory outfitted with robotics, laser cutting, CNC milling, and UV finishing, allowing it to produce guitars at scale for export across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The lineup included the all-solid-wood, Canadian-built G series (such as the G30) and the more affordable, overseas-built AG series (including models like the AG-300), along with all-solid-wood mandolins and mandolas. Garrison also made extensive use of Canadian tonewoods.
Gibson acquired Garrison Guitars in 2007, and the St. John's factory was later converted to produce Gibson's Songmaker series of acoustics before being closed in 2010. Garrison instruments continue to circulate on the used market, where the GABS-braced acoustics remain of particular interest to players curious about the bracing experiment.
