Hopf is a German guitar maker with roots in instrument craftsmanship dating back to 1669, when the Hopf family began making violins in the Klingenthal/Markneukirchen region. Caspar Hopf (1655–1716) is the first documented luthier of the family, and the workshop tradition carried through generations until Ernst Max Hopf established operations in western Germany in the early 20th century. From the 1950s through the 1970s, under Dieter Hopf, the company became one of the most prominent German guitar builders of its era, producing archtops, classical guitars, and electric instruments alongside contemporaries like Höfner, Framus, and Klira.
The brand is best known among vintage collectors for its 1960s electrics, particularly the Saturn 63 — an archtop with a distinctive futuristic body shape and built-in vibrato — and the Telstar, a solidbody named after the 1962 communications satellite and offered in Standard and International variants (the rarer International featuring three pickups and gold hardware). A Saturn Bass version was also produced. These instruments are sought after on the vintage market for their build quality and unusual designs.
A new generation of the Hopf family relaunched the electric guitar line in 2022 with the Saturn 23, a modern reissue of the Saturn 63 built in collaboration with luthier Boris Dommenget, followed by the Saturn SB. The Dieter Hopf name continues separately as a classical concert guitar atelier.
