Hugh Tracey is a line of kalimbas and other African percussion instruments produced by African Musical Instruments (AMI), a small workshop based in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in South Africa's Eastern Cape. The company was founded in 1954 by British-born ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey (1903–1977), who spent decades recording and documenting music across Southern and Central Africa. Drawing from the Shona mbira and related lamellophones found across Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia, Tracey developed a Western-tuned thumb piano — which he marketed under the name kalimba — so that the instrument could be played alongside Western music traditions.
The workshop's best-known instruments are its Alto and Treble kalimbas, built with bodies of local kiaat hardwood and hand-tuned spring-steel tines. AMI also produces Celeste kalimbas with a resonating box, chromatic double-sided kalimbas, and a range of marimbas, xylophones, Orff educational instruments, and hand percussion. Instruments are assembled by hand in the Grahamstown workshop and shipped internationally, often sold through specialist retailers such as Kalimba Magic and DAN MOI as well as general music stores.
Hugh Tracey kalimbas occupy a particular niche as the reference instrument for players looking for an African-made, traditionally-constructed thumb piano with Western tuning, and they are frequently cited in educational and ethnomusicological contexts. The company continues to operate as a small, family-involved workshop, with instrument design and production overseen by the Carver family alongside a team of local craftspeople.
