King is an American brand of brass instruments with roots dating back to 1893, when engraver and repairman Henderson N. White founded the H. N. White Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The company's first notable product was a trombone designed for local player Thomas King, whose name the brand later adopted. Over the decades King expanded from brass into woodwinds, introducing the King Zephyr saxophone in 1935 and the Super 20 line, while also offering lower-priced student instruments under the Cleveland and American Standard labels.
Following the company's 1965 sale to the Seeburg Corporation, production moved to Eastlake, Ohio, and the trade name was formalized as King Musical Instruments. The rights to the King name are held by Conn-Selmer, which continues to manufacture King brass in Eastlake. The lineup focuses on trumpets, trombones, tubas, and marching brass, with well-known models including the Silver Flair trumpet, the 2B and 3B Silversonic trombones, and the 2103 Symphony trombone.
King instruments are particularly associated with jazz and big-band brass playing. The 2B trombone, originally developed with input from Tommy Dorsey, remains a staple among lead and commercial trombonists for its small-bore agility and bright projection, and King horns have historical ties to players such as Harry James.
