Mako was a budget music gear brand distributed by C. Bruno & Son Inc., a subsidiary of Kaman Music Corporation, beginning around 1980. The label covered a broad catalog that included electric guitars, bass guitars, solid-state amplifiers, and a line of effects pedals such as chorus, distortion, and phase shifter units, aimed at entry-level and student players.
Like many import brands of its era, Mako instruments were manufactured in Korea. Early models were largely rebadged Hondo designs, and later production shifted to Cort and Samick factories, which also built instruments for numerous other catalog brands of the period. The guitars typically followed popular bolt-on superstrat and copy-style body shapes.
Mako is no longer in active production and survives primarily on the vintage and used market, where its 1980s electrics, basses, and combo amps occasionally turn up through sites like Reverb and eBay. The brand is generally regarded as a low-cost beginner line from the import boom of the early-to-mid 1980s rather than a collector-grade maker.
