Orr is a small custom guitar and bass operation built around the work of Charles "Chuck" Orr, a Minneapolis luthier who ran The Guitar Shop on 42nd Street in south Minneapolis beginning in the mid-1970s. Orr worked with a freeform construction approach, turning out one-off electric guitars and basses that frequently featured unconventional body shapes and idiosyncratic combinations of parts, pickups, and hardware rather than copies of established designs.
The shop's best-known association is with Prince, who hung out at Orr's store as a teenager alongside friends André Cymone and Dez Dickerson. A custom Orr electric guitar appears in the music video for Prince's 1979 single "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?", and an Orr bass was built for Prince and credited in the liner notes of his debut album, For You. One Orr-built instrument made for Prince is held in the Smithsonian's collection. Bass output in particular was very limited — only a handful were ever produced.
