Pleasant was a Japanese electric guitar brand manufactured by Shinko Gakki in the mid-1960s. Shinko Gakki had built its reputation in the 1950s as a woodworking factory producing organs and pianos before moving into acoustic guitars in the early 1960s and solid-body electrics around 1964. Pleasant-branded instruments were sold on the domestic Japanese market, while the same factory's guitars reached the United States under names like Lafayette, Cipher, Telstar, and St. George.
The lineup was heavily influenced by British and European designs of the era, particularly Burns and Eko, alongside original offset shapes. Popular models included the SEL series (such as the SEL-220) and Jaguar-style offsets, often featuring strong Burns-style pickups, controls tucked beneath the pickguard, and laminated necks — Shinko is generally credited as the first Japanese manufacturer to use multi-laminated necks, a construction approach later adopted by larger factories like Kawai and Zen-On.
Shinko Gakki ceased operations in the mid-to-late 1960s and was absorbed into Kawai, ending the Pleasant brand after only a few years of production. Despite the short run, the factory produced a substantial number of instruments, and surviving Pleasant guitars are sought after by vintage Japanese guitar collectors for their build quality and distinctive designs.
