Founded in 2006 by Tim Larwill, an Ottawa-based engineer, Retro-Sonic is a Canadian boutique pedal company specializing in handmade recreations of classic guitar effects updated with modern components and features. Larwill's path into pedal building grew out of a passion for vintage cars and garage rock, which led him to recreate the sounds of iconic stompboxes from the 1970s and '80s. His first design was the Chorus Ensemble, a faithful reproduction of the 1976 Boss CE-1 using original analog bucket brigade device (BBD) chips.
Retro-Sonic's lineup includes recreations of several legendary circuits: the Flanger (based on the Electro-Harmonix 18V Electric Mistress), the Analog Delay (based on the Boss DM-2 with up to 800ms of delay time), the Eight-0-Eight Overdrive (based on the Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer), the Compressor (inspired by the Ross Compressor), and a Distortion pedal built around the classic LM308 chip. Each pedal is individually hand-built and tested in Ottawa. The Flanger earned a Premier Guitar Premier Gear Award, with reviewers praising its open, spacious modulation and its improved design over the original Electric Mistress — notably the addition of a level control that addresses the notorious volume drop of vintage units.
Retro-Sonic has 8 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Phaser Effects Pedals, Chorus Effects Pedals, and Compressor Effects Pedals.
