Sears, Roebuck and Co. was an American retailer whose catalog and store network served as one of the most important distribution channels for affordable musical instruments and amplifiers in the United States from the 1930s through the early 1970s. Rather than manufacturing gear themselves, Sears contracted with established builders and sold the resulting instruments under house brand names — most prominently Silvertone, which superseded the earlier Oxford label and ran from roughly 1916 through 1972. Through the Sears catalog, would-be musicians could order electric and acoustic guitars, basses, amplifiers, drums, harmonicas, and accessories at prices that put gear within reach of households that could not afford instruments from specialty music shops.

The instruments sold through Sears were built by a rotating cast of American manufacturers including Danelectro, Harmony, Kay, Valco, Teisco, and Thomas. Notable catalog offerings included the Danelectro-built Silvertone 1448/1449 "Amp-in-Case" guitars, the Harmony-made 1478, and a line of Silvertone tube amplifiers introduced in 1963 — among them the 15-watt 1482, the 1484 "Twin Twelve," and the 1485 "Six Ten." The Danelectro-built tube amps in particular have developed a strong following among players and collectors for their distinctive overdriven tone.

Sears-sold instruments became formative tools for a generation of blues, rock, and garage musicians who started on whatever they could mail-order from the catalog. The brand's role in music gear largely wound down with the discontinuation of Silvertone in the early 1970s; the Silvertone trademark was later acquired by Samick Music Corporation, which has issued reissues of several classic catalog models.
