Seeburg is an American manufacturer best known for coin-operated phonographs and jukeboxes. Founded in 1902 in Chicago by Justus Percival Sjöberg, a Swedish immigrant who Americanized his surname, the J. P. Seeburg Piano Company began by building orchestrions and automatic pianos before pivoting to coin-operated music machines as gramophone records gained popularity. Seeburg introduced the multi-select "Audiophone" in 1928 and went on to become one of the "big four" jukebox makers alongside Wurlitzer, Rock-Ola, and AMI.
The company's most influential products include the Select-O-Matic mechanism, which in 1949 enabled play of both sides of 50 records for a true 100-selection jukebox, and the M100B (1950), the first jukebox built around the 45 rpm record. Models such as the M100C, V200, HF100R, and the L100 from the late 1950s remain prized among collectors and restorers. Seeburg jukeboxes shipped with integrated tube amplifiers — often using 6973 output tubes — mounted to the back service door, with automatic volume control circuits balancing playback levels between records.
Beyond jukeboxes, Seeburg produced background-music systems and stereo consoles for the home. The brand's hardware is kept alive today through a network of restoration specialists and replacement-parts vendors, with companies like Victory Glass offering modern solid-state amplifier replacements (such as the S-SSA1) for vintage Seeburg cabinets.
