Shaftesbury is a British guitar and bass brand launched in the late 1960s as the house brand of London-based musical instrument distributor Rose Morris. The name was taken from the company's Shaftesbury Avenue showroom, which opened in September 1967, and the first Shaftesbury instruments were shown at the British Musical Instrument trade fair in London in August 1968. The line was created in part as a response to Rose Morris losing its UK distribution deal with Rickenbacker, and it aimed to offer mid-priced instruments inspired by established American designs.
Early Shaftesbury guitars were built in Japan, with production believed to have been handled by makers such as Matsumoku and Kasuga, before shifting to Italy by 1969 where Eko's Recanati factory manufactured many of the models. A smaller run of UK-built instruments, the Ned Callan models, was produced by luthier Peter Cook with bodies and necks from Shergold. The catalog covered Rickenbacker-style semi-hollow guitars and basses such as the 3261, 3262 and 3263, a Gibson Barney Kessel-inspired 3264, the Les Paul-style 3400 solidbody, the Perspex-bodied 2402 in the vein of the Dan Armstrong, and the Ned Callan Cody (3420/3421).
The brand was revived by Rose Morris, which is based at 10 Denmark Street in London's historic music district, and the contemporary range spans guitars, basses, drums and effects pedals alongside a vintage vault of older Shaftesbury instruments from the original British, Japanese and Italian production runs.
