Soniccouture is a London-based developer of virtual instruments and sample libraries, founded in 2005 by James Thompson and Dan Powell, both former Yamaha R&D engineers. The company built its reputation by focusing on rare, unusual, and underrepresented instruments rather than competing in the crowded market of conventional piano and drum kit libraries. Their first release, Abstrakt Vol. 1, was followed by a series of instruments that established them as one of the most inventive developers in the sampling world, including their acclaimed Balinese Gamelan, Pan Drum, and Hang Drum libraries.

Soniccouture's catalog spans a wide range of categories — from world and ethnic instruments like the Kora and GuZheng, to vintage keyboards like the Novachord and their Canterbury Suitcase electric piano, to experimental sound design tools like Geosonics (a collaboration with field recordist Chris Watson) and Konkrete, which draws on musique concrète traditions. They also produce collaborative projects with artists, most notably the Box of Tricks collection developed with Imogen Heap, which features her custom-built instruments including a five-octave Array Mbira. Their Balinese Gamelan library was used by composer Dave Porter in the Breaking Bad soundtrack.

All Soniccouture instruments are built on Native Instruments' Kontakt platform, with many supporting NKS integration for hardware controller compatibility. The company is known for its meticulous sampling approach — recording every note individually across numerous velocity layers rather than relying on interpolation — and for designing expressive, performance-oriented interfaces that go well beyond simple sample playback.
