Sound Workshop was an American pro audio manufacturer best known for analog mixing consoles and stereo spring reverb units produced from the 1970s into the 1990s. The company built a reputation in project and mid-tier professional studios with consoles like the Series 20, Series 30, and Series 34, the latter two reportedly designed by engineers who came from API. Its Logex 8 was an earlier compact recording desk that found use in smaller production rooms.
Outside of consoles, Sound Workshop is most widely remembered for its 242, 242C, and 262 stereo spring reverbs. These rack units paired dual spring tanks with input level, reverb level, and tone controls per channel, and developed a cult following for a dense, gritty character that contrasts with cleaner plate or digital reverbs of the era. They turn up regularly on the used market and have been cited as favorites by engineers chasing vintage spring textures on drums, vocals, and guitars.
The brand was eventually absorbed by Otari, and Sound Workshop equipment is now treated as vintage gear, with active communities on Gearspace, Tape Op, and Facebook trading parts, schematics, and restoration tips for the consoles and outboard units.
