Staccato is a British music company founded in 1977 by Pat Townshend, originally based in Notting Hill, London before settling in Norfolk, England. The company is best known for its distinctive asymmetrically shaped fiberglass and carbon fiber drum shells, designed around what Townshend called the "kadency principle." The unconventional horn-like shape and projecting sound made the kits a frequent choice for film, television, and stage productions, with appearances ranging from Robbie Williams videos to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
In the late 1970s and 1980s, Staccato also produced magnesium alloy guitars, beginning with an interchangeable-neck design that allowed players to swap between six-string, twelve-string, and bass configurations on a single body. The guitar venture was structured as a partnership that included Bill Wyman, Mick Jagger, and Chris Jagger. A subsequent fixed-neck model, the M.G., saw a limited run of around 200 units in the mid-1980s before guitar production wound down.
Drummers associated with Staccato kits include Mitch Mitchell, Simon Phillips, and Keith Moon, and the drums have been used by acts such as Eurythmics and Rammstein. Following Pat Townshend's death in 2011, the company has been operated by his brothers, who continue to build the drums to the original design.
