Best with a pop filter, but a wonderful microphone
I record samples for vocal synthesis voicebanks using this microphone, and this requires very clear sound without wind issues, but if you don't need perfect sound, you don't necessarily need a pop filter. The microphone is very clear but typically records at a very low volume and so must be amplified digitally to a degree.

Far Better than the Standalone
Using Vocaloid in Cubase is far more convenient than using it as a standalone, especially in composing, production, and mixing, because you can refine and switch vocals right up until the end, as well as adjusting the song to fit the quirks of the vocal. Remember, the Vocaloid Editor and the voices are sold separately!

Cubase Elements 8
Cubase is a confusing-looking DAW, but it's easy to use once you become comfortable with the layout. Many things seem hidden, but there are many tutorials online that are very helpful! I typically use Vocaloid and Alter/Ego in Cubase as well as vst vocals, and I love having everything in one place.

Complicated, expensive, but very high quality
I am a Vocaloid user who has both Vocaloid 3 and 4 for Cubase. Vocaloid is complicated for new users, and somewhat intimidating when one first starts out. However, it has many adjustment options, and although it takes a while to become proficient at "tuning" (editing) the voice, it's quite enjoyable. It should be noted that the editor and the voices must be purchased SEPARATELY, which leads to quite a high cost.

Sounds cool, hard to master
In comparison to other vocal synthesizers, Alter/Ego is less user-friendly, with most of the features sort-of hidden, and creates less realistic results. However, it has a unique sound that makes it worth trying out. Also, it's free. Just, remember to space out the notes to allow the pronunciation and phonemes to render correctly.

Excellent Free Beginner Vocal Synth
UTAU is excellent for many reasons, but the main feature that makes it attractive is the ability to use your own voice to create a sound bank. There are also many good additions to the program that are available for download, and an almost limitless collection of free sound banks. And because everything's free, it's all very worth it.
