I didn't notice comments were disabled. How long was I oblivious, Michael?

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard

Over the past few months, we’ve been refactoring pages one by one. To speed up updates, we released the latest product pages without replies to comments enabled. While it was already on our to-do list, we moved it up in priority last week after the feedback in this thread. So... I'd say like 3 months.

Hopefully this helps more conversations!

Thanks Michael (and Giulio)! Just tried it out, seems to work great, just as I remember.

Would it be possible to make it so we can list more specific genres on individual artist pages? On user profiles and band pages, we can add very niche subgenres, but all individual artists get are the very topmost categories. It's probably difficult to work out how specific the subgenres should be (especially with stuff like extreme metal) but I think the selection available on user pages and stuff is quite solid already. At the very least, please separate Folk, World, and Country!

Hi. I know we’re getting way beyond August now, but it would be nice to see one or two large music gear retailers from Australia/Oceania/Asia added as well for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere. 🤘👍🏿

Any updates on this? This has been happening for almost a year and no progress has been made. Really would like to have item numbers match up correctly.

I propose an expiration date for the "Duplicate Items" submissions. I noticed some of them have been sitting there for years.

Sometimes I'll find something to submit then I'll find that it's been submitted years ago and there's no way to bump it up. I propose a 2 month maximum in the queue, then any submission that goes over gets automatically deleted. Having submissions expire is also a good way of uncluttering the Duplicate Items page.

Option B would be a bump button, but limit its use (per account) to once a week or something like that.

  • King Tone MiniFuzz V2
  • Eastman E10OOSS/V Acoustic Guitar

bubbajones asked for an Extra Listing of Gear for insurance purposes. Not so much for me , but for sure interessting for more People on Equipboard: https://equipboard.com/forums/general/topics/export-equipment-list

GEAR:
  • Squier 40th Anniversary Jazzmaster Vintage Edition
  • Fender Hot Rod Deluxe IV
  • EarthQuaker Devices Plumes

but I assure you any american insurance company will not honor that list without photos of serial numbers and even then maybe not these days... business insurance might but homeowners or renters will not

I would agree if we had a consensus on what constitutes a dupe. Lets square that away and then implement this suggestion. Are different finishes dupes? Let's get a poll up!

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

I would say most finishes are dupes, or at the minimum solid colors are. Bursts I would say are dupes of most other finishes too and vice versa.

I was kinda thinking about this as I was submitting PRS duplicates this morning. As for Wood figuring, it depends. A 10-Top PRS in my eyes should have its own page separate from a non 10-Top solely because PRS upcharges almost a grand on 10-Tops. On the flip side, for Gibson Les Pauls, figuring doesn't matter as much because Gibson doesn't differentiate between AAA and AA flame in their naming convention.

Yes for Colors we might wanna have , that you can select the Picture of the Item for your Profile and Gear, so it shows up in the right Color. That would be great. Also holding more People up to create dublicates, of course it might will happen, but I think not so often anymore. Also better on Artist, so the Gear can be identify more easy. And an Edit to the Brand Logo would be great.

Colors are duplicates and should be merged.

Colors and finishes are currently a big issue across the site. We’re actively working to consolidate them, and we’d love your input on how to make the duplicate submission or merging process smoother.

Our goal is to make gear easier to find and to better surface reviews, artist usage, and related items. We’re starting with colors, and our plan looks like this:

  1. Remove color and finish names from product titles.
  2. Consolidate those variations into a single product page so reviews, artist usage, similar items, and specs are all in one place. Making the site easier to explore across all aspects, really.
  3. Add structured tags and selectors for variations like finish, year, fretboard type (maple vs. rosewood), or mods. This will also let us map accurate purchase links and photos to the right variation when a product is still in production.

We’ve kicked off step one, but it’s a big project. Let us know what you think. We’d love your ideas!

You guys already know I'm all for hierarchy:

  • 5000 artists used a Fender Precision Bass
  • - 80 artists used a 1959 Fender Precision Bass
  • - - 30 artists used a sunburst 1959 Fender Precision Bass
  • - - - 2 artists used a sunburst + rosewood 1959 Fender Precision Bass

That said, I know that the following details are important many of the ppl who contribute regularly:

  1. In their own Equipboards, users want the item pictured to look just like the one they own: matching color, matching fretboard, matching year/vintage details. Who wouldn't?

  2. In their hero's Equipboard, users want the item pictured to look just like the one their hero used, and they DO care about details like the year, color, fretboard, etc.

  3. If their hero played 5 different Fender Stratocasters throughout their career, they want a separate EB entry for each notable Strat their hero played, not just one master entry for Fender Stratocaster that somehow covers all the different makes and models their hero used.

I agree that it matters, and initially we're going to fix it by being able to add the details/metadata to the item you save to your Equipboard. For example, I own a Fender Telecaster Custom. However, mine's black, from 1978, with a maple neck. We'll give the ability to tag those things. Then if you want to show off your very own one, we encourage uploading a gear photo.

Yup same thing here. Soon we'll make it so that you can attach color/year/etc as further details about a submission.

Agree with you here also, and I think we can fix this using the details/metadata we're talking about here. An artist can then have a Fender Stratocaster multiple times, but one needs to be tagged as Sunburst and 1990, one Olympic White and 1972, etc.

Also, we made the duplicate item submission process more fluid, meaning, you know how sometimes you have a thread or case going with customer service at some company, and after some time the thread can be closed, but if you still need help you can reply to the thread and it opens it back up?

That's how dup item submissions work now. So if yours gets denied, don't be offended ;) It just means you can leave a comment with a little more detail about why the products in question are duplicates and should be merged, and it'll "open" it back up. On our end, closing/denying them helps keep the queue moving so that entries don't just stall and become stale because nobody's chiming in.

Finally, a huge THANK YOU to everyone helping spot and consolidate duplicates, we have a long way to go but we're taking this seriously. We made a leaderboard for it too just for fun, you can see it by going to the duplicate items queue, at the top is a link that says Check out the leaderboard. :)

Good to hear from you, Guilio. Thanks for the details.

Your plan for appending metadata sounds promising.

In your above example, would the title of the Fender Telecaster Custom entry as seen from your personal EB display as 1978 Fender Telecaster Custom — Black + Maple Neck, or something like that?

The image everyone sees in your EB for that item would still be whatever the first/default photo is for the current Telecaster Custom entry, right?

Nice :)

Is submitting a dupe fully gamified?

Something like that. I think it would be the base product name with tags/pills next to the name or under it, so it could look like:

Fender Telecaster Custom [1978] [Black] [Maple Neck]

Maybe even a little [see it] link if you've tied a gear photo to it, and by clicking it it takes me straight to the actual photo of it so I can see YOUR guitar in all its glory, or your actual pedal as part of your board, etc

The image everyone sees in your EB for that item would still be whatever the first/default photo is for the current Telecaster Custom entry, right?

For now yeah. We don't want to let perfect be the enemy of good.

Not yet, but it should be. Great idea. Let us see if we can cook this one up by the end of the weekend and assign everyone their due GearIQ for the approved dups they've submitted :)
