I Write For The Site, Is There Any Articles You Guys Would Like To See

Hey guys, I write for Equipboard's blog (and I love it!). I think the community here is awesome (compared to others cough cough r/guitar). Since a lot of our articles are written with you guys in mind, is there any sort of content you'd like to see featured on the blog?

...top five basses?

or like starter amps.

I'll keep that one in mind. I like your username by the way.

Thanks for contributing!

A comparison of plectrum materials and the difference they make.

I think one of those should actually be going up soon. Basically what I found was that nylon and celluloid sound really warm, tortex is in the middle, and the other tortoiseshell-like materials tend to sound a bit more trebly. This was going off of different forum posts and articles, but of course it's never going to stop being a topic of debate lol.

You could do tone-wood argument/article. That would keep you typing for ages.

Lol, it wouldn't be an article so much as a book. I think trying to write an article like that would literally drive me crazy. I'd just end up crying in a corner, sucking my thumb, and rambling about sitka vs. adirondack.

I don't think it would be that bad. Eventually, your research would lead to ebony and walnut being the best and you'd be seen as a hero among musicians.

I'm more of a rosewood and spruce man myself. So I bit I'd run into some salty comments if I went with my preference.

What about a boutique vs old masters series? one for pedals, guitars, basses, amps, mics... discussing what they are making gear with now and how they compare on the whole to what they were inspired by?

articles that favor science over opinion? I'm not sure which articles you wrote but a great many of them , while useful for youngsters in a general way, contain downright electronic and acoustic falsehoods regurgitated as received wisdom

You link me some peer reviewed studies or scientific articles that have quality data nd I'll definitely look at them because I do research things. I generally try to find a consensus from a variety of different places to try and counter act some of my bias, which while that isn't the best way to go about things it does help keep me from pushing my opinion into things too much.

But yeah, you have any good resources and I'll definitely check them out.

This is awesome. I'll think on it more. If we end up picking this up I'll mention you in the end, and if I don't bitch me out in the comments and I'll get it changed.

if I know what you're writing about I can hit you up with some actual specs of products.... I actually AM a resource, as I can read a schematic for just about anything music-technology and know how it works. So for isntances if you are writing a boutique OD review Ic an tell you which ones are secretly subescreamers just by taking the back plate off and looking at the PCB, opamps, diode configuration and feedback loop....

I actually attempted to write some content for the site, but Michael felt I was way too detail oriented and long-winded and I just couldn't figure out how to edit my article without losing the parts that I thought made it a good review/buyer's guide. I am just not cut out for journalism. Ask me for a page and you get a book! My prose is tight, direct and concise.... but there's a lot of it and I spend so long one very sentence making it convey maximum info with minimum words that I just cannot edit beyond the 2nd or 3rd draft! And Michael wasn't sure what I should cut either but he felt it was definitely long and a bit boring at times LOL

Looking at my work sheet I don't really have a use for you at the moment, but if you'd be willing to send me some contact information I'll definitely get in touch with you to clarify some things for me. I'm not sure if we can DM or not since I'm just now getting into using the site's forums and I'm not comfortable posting my email address.

If anything, if you want me to have a more in-depth understanding (I have a functional understanding of all of the gear we cover, but only to a point) for when I write more technical pieces you can send me a quick write-up on how the electronic portion of pedals and amps function. I get the basic ideas of the sound they make but I'm always happen to learn more and my mechanical knowledge doesn't extend much farther than simple repairs.

I was actually supposed to start an apprenticeship with a local guitar shop that does repairs, but the guys brother in law put his foot down about it so he didn't have any competition in town lol. Would've been cool to land that job!

I can't compensate you anything, but I'd definitely read through it and try to incorporate it into what I can. No hard feelings if you don't want to spend time doing it for free though, I would totally understand.

Just to clarify, it's not that I didn't like the articles. At the time, we were trying get articles that would perform well for bringing people to Equipboard that had never heard of us and interact with the site. What we found was that most people entering in questions on google or seeing an article on facebook or twitter are much more interested in beginner levels and opinions than in technically deep. In fact, we saw that when articles got too long or technical, people would actually leave sooner than the more succinct summaries. But, that's very specific to that situation.

Just saying, as to be fair, I've given Mason specific direction to make it newbie friendly. Having said that, if you guys ever see inaccuracies, I'd like to fix it.

I actually pretty much read most of what you write because I take your opinion seriously and look for your comments specifically when trying to learn about new gear. To that end, (and now that I know a little more about Equipboard's audience's preferences), I'd love for you to write some articles for EB that we tailor to the more spec-centric crowd. Would you be interested in writing a piece on the history and model variations of tube screamers? Email me and let me know and we can discuss details.

Thank you! I'll definitely be in touch if I need some clarification on something.

The History of the Tubescreamer was printed in Premier Guitar March 23, 2017, from an article written in 2011.

I have often thought that these forums needed a Tech Tips Corner or a How It Works section with Jim. His knowledge is otherworldly on quite a few things.

I just freelance so I don't have any say with the company, but I'd be interested in something like this as well. If anything maybe a stickied post in the Guitarists and Bassists section of the forum that functions as a Q&A panel?
