The revival of rock

It's been awhile, particularly over here in the UK. But finally, we're seeing some talented guitarists and bassists getting the attention they deserve. Examples:

Jake Bugg, Royal Blood's Mike Kerr, George Ezra.

(No, I didn't forget Ed Sheeran ... shudder!)

What about in your neck of the woods?

I'm a blues/rock fan, so recently I've been impressed by Gary Clark Jr., Benjamin Booker, and Alabama Shakes. Not sure if those folks meet your criteria, but hope you enjoy.

Here's Gary at Crossroads.

You guys in the UK have all the best musicians! I'm biased though, the majority of the bands that have moved me the most hail from there - Depeche Mode, Editors, Franz Ferdinand, The Kooks, Oasis, Kasabian, and the list goes on.

I'm curious, how is Ed Sheeran perceived in the UK, in terms of being a talented guitarist? Here in the US, in typical fashion, he's seen as a top 40 folk/pop artist. I think people love his lyrics and his energy and his "nice guy" persona, but I don't hear many people commenting on his musicianship (which I personally think is impressive).

Thanks ;) - Ed Sheeran's probably perceived more as a singer/songwriter than a guitarist. He can play electric well enough, but more commonly seen just strumming along on a elec/acoustic.

For me, his older stuff pre-success was quite good. Now, it just comes across as very over produced. For example, that awful track where he sings in falsetto while a puppet that looks more like Simon Cowell jigs all over the place.

Nothing against the guy personally, he does seem like a genuinely nice person.

Scott Holiday from the Rival Sons! This guy is where it's at. Rival Sons are signed to Earache and from what I heard they are HUGE in Europe.

Gimme a Rival Sons song to start out with, they're pretty new to me!

Their current single is Open My Eyes from the album Great Western Valkyrie. But also check out Torture, that was their debut European single back in 2011. Amazing vocals, raw guitar.

Are you a Noel Gallagher fan? Opinion on his newest effort?

Hi Gchiaren,

I like some of his work on open chord riffing. I never liked Oasis though. I found their music very samey. Beatles + distortion, rinse and repeat. I'll check out the link, but doubt his style has changed much.

Cheers.

This is an acoustic performance of Jordan on their previous album "Head Down."
