User Submitting Own Artist Page

I just realized that this guy is submitting his gear to an Equipboard page he made for himself. What should be done? He does not have the following of a usual pro.

GEAR:
  • sE Electronics V7
  • Fender Vintage Series '57 Stratocaster
  • Blank slot

Things get weird when your only follower is... you...

GEAR:
  • Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer
  • Roland SH-101
  • Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer

this happens all the time and there's an ongoing thread about it amongst admins and mods.... I hate when people do this. It chaps my musical ass.

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

this, exactly

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

the utter conceit of people anymore... seriously, sickening

We're moving towards utilizing MusicBrainz, Spotify, and Wikidata to help us better structure our artist data.

We're considering making it a requirement that an artist has to have a presence on one of those 3 services in order to be added as a community-editable artist page.

Is it perfect? No. I think anyone can put themselves on Spotify. But at least we would be making it more difficult to bend the rules...

GEAR:
  • Fender Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar
  • Big Ear Pedals Woodcutter
  • HeadRush FRFR Go Portable Desktop Amplifier

drinkin' helps... cheers

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6

it happens almost daily, man, I see it multiple times a week with lots of users (mainly teens) creating and following their own pro pages... we're acutely aware of the situation

It happened again.

Jim's right it does happen all the time. As I said earlier, I think we need to fundamentally rethink the process of adding a new artist profile. What we're leaning towards is keeping part of the current process where it lists some possible matches and you have to select if it's one of those.

However, right now we allow users to say None of these, I prefer to add manually. This will go away. Instead, we'll say, None of these? Please enter a Spotify link or WikiData link for the artist you're trying to add.

That way, the manual option goes away, and we're more assured of the artist's legitimacy by them being on either MusicBrainz, Spotify, or WikiData.

Does that make sense?

Yes, but what if the artist has no presence on any of the three?

GEAR:
  • sE Electronics V7
  • Fender Vintage Series '57 Stratocaster
  • Blank slot

Another one, but this time it seems his soundtracks have placed at film festivals. Does that make mebitek an exception?

it still weird because he's his sole follower, but he's a legit composer I guess... I think its kinda funky that he's got one spitfire pack and a lousy little minibrute... how is he getting soundtrack work when ic an't seem to anymore? My studio alone should sell me. That doesn't invalidate him, but if its okay for him to make a pro page I'll make on for my old band who were pretty popular regionally... and I'll make one for myself LOL

Are there circumstances in which it's OK to create a wikipedia entry about yourself? Not really.

My own personal 2 cents is that an Artist profile needs to be started organically, by someone other than the artist themselves. There isn't some threshold of success that would make self-populating an artist profile permissible; it's just not done, per the standards of this site and its community.

I feel like if maybe Jimmy fucking Page decided to start his own page he could start a user page and then edit his existing pro page by using himself as a source, because he's like, Jimmy fucking Page.... my final cent

Without a system for real world ID verification, ala Twitter verified accounts, allowing "because I'm Jimmy #@$ing Page" to stand as proof/verification of a gear spotting would be problematic.

...but I don't necessarily think an ID verification system is anything worth prioritizing right now...

...so, if @jimmypage tries updating pros/jimmy-page, I'm gonna assume it's a fake account and (very politely) ask this user to provide the same evidence everyone else has to abide by. :D

Maybe someday, in a different phase of EB's evolution, things will be totally different and top artists will have a natural motivation to maintain their own accounts here... but right now, in 2020, I'm feeling like everyone having to abide by the same standards keeps things simple.

...but I know nobody is standing around wondering what my personal feelings are on any of this, LOL... I'm just thinking out loud here...

(Edited Nov 8 to condense my ramblings a bit)

the assumption was Jimmy was identified... submitted his fingerprints?

How does Twitter do it?

I think, just to be safe, Team EB should fly you out to Jimmy's place for tea, biscuits, and jamming. If you say it's really Jimmy Page, after a solid face-to-face, I'll trust that.
