Why Can't I add items without a link?

Hi, I just realized it is impossible to add atimes that are on sale at any of the supported shops now. I want to add this https://www.carousell.com.my/p/mod-ss-overdrive-rare-ken-multi-269698614/ pedal, but I can't since it isn't produced anymore and it isn't listed on Reverb. What to do?

First I want to say that I think you are right - allowing products that are only sold at the largest music stores leaves out a lot of smaller boutique builders, and that is a problem we'll need to solve for sure.

The reason behind this decision was to slow down the large number of low quality items that people have been adding every day. This includes duplicates, near-duplicates, and items that are WAY too specific that don't really help the Equipboard database become more useful.

There comes a point where if a product added to Equipboard has no reviews, no pro artist usage, no specs, and no accurate way of tracking price, it actually ends up being a rather useless page. And if you accumulate enough of these, it affects the quality of the site as a whole.

Actually I'm curious, what was your intention for adding this item to the site? Is it one that you own and want to save to your Equipboard? Did you spot an artist using it? Did you intend to write a review?

  • Big Ear Pedals Woodcutter
  • HeadRush FRFR Go Portable Desktop Amplifier

I get that, and I agree that there are too much duplicates and unnecessary entries in the database. It's just a pedal I bought recently and wanted to add to my personal gear list.

Sorry but I can‘t agree to this point that you need to have a official reverb item link or a shop link to add a new item.

I suggest to add an item if it’s normally listed at reverb but doesn’t have to have an extra item page.

Otherwise this would exclude smaller and innovative pedal makers such as Drunk Beaver Pedals.

And, what I‘m very upset with is that it’s no longer possible to add pedal kits such as pedalpcb or AionFX.

I appeal to undo this option because otherwise equipboard will get a reduced, boring and down graded collection of only global player / major brand pedals.

One of the intentions of equipboard is to get new information or impressions of new and not common gear.

So please next time ask the community before adding this kind of censorship option.

If you are interested in more high quality items there could be an extra option to mark bad quality items like the double item option and honor it with a bigger amount of IQ points.

Best regards

Smellslikebleach

Is there a way to accept normal item pages? Or how can I make a /p/ page at reverb for an item?

Same here! I spotted an artist using a branded an equipment and unfortunately it does not exist on reverb! grrr

This policy also excludes a lot of "world instruments", since all of those site predominantly cater to Western music. There are many instruments from the Middle East and Asia, just as an example, that can't be found on those websites.

Ok, we hear you. We're trying to think of a way to allow more items while at the same time reducing the number of low quality item entries. We'll keep you posted in this thread.

In the meantime, mods & admins can get an item added for you, so you can request it here. Just say:

Mods can you please add

Name: [item name]

Image: [image URL]

GEAR:
  • Fender Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar
  • Big Ear Pedals Woodcutter
  • HeadRush FRFR Go Portable Desktop Amplifier

Honestly? So we normal user are underage to add new items? I have to make a request for every new item I want to add?

That’s again a bit disappointing, sorry.

Simply undo this censorship option and add an option to mark / report items with bad quality. Give the reporting users some IQ for the report. I guess that’s that simple.

Ok.

I don't think a backlog of flagged items would be very simple.

Per gchiaren:

The reason behind this decision was to slow down the large number of low quality items that people have been adding every day. This includes duplicates, near-duplicates, and items that are WAY too specific that don't really help the Equipboard database become more useful.

It's one thing to flag someone's gear entry that was added for the sake of an artist. Like this too-specific entry made just for Tyler Joseph

The conversation for something like this is basically "Thanks, but we're going to remove this because it's redundant relative to other Precision Bass entries in this Artist's profile"

And the user's response will probably be pretty understanding... or, more likely, no response at all.

But there are also a sizable number of items in the database that are people's custom creations: partscasters, custom-enclosure DIY pedals, circuit-bent-synths, etc. People added them because they made them, they own them, and they want to show them off on their personal EB page, which is totally understandable... but these items wouldn't really fit the goals listed above either.

It's one thing for someone to request their custom project be added, and to explain to them, before it's added, why entries here need to be more generalized... it's a whole different dynamic to let someone add dozens of custom creations, and then have them flagged and removed. Nobody feels good about that. Time has been invested to create the entries, users have gotten used to seeing them along side more mainstream entries... I suspect it would get messy.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the stated guidelines/aims of these changes. This is entirely possible.

The current, restricted, gear-add system will need some iterations to smooth out. The system for supporting startup/boutique/direct-sale-only gear and gear from around the world needs to be clear and smooth and not make those types of entries feel unwelcome or less-than... but asking the entire community to interpret a set of nuanced guidelines and then turning them loose to penalize the perviously-inscrutable added items of other users feels like the wrong approach to me... ditto for only giving the power to flag to mods and admins, as having a small number of people chase down rouge entries after they've been added would burn a ton of time that could be better spent elsewhere.

I personally would prefer to undo all restrictions concerning item adding. I'm also creating some DIY-Pedals from aion, guitarpcb and so on. And I won't get the point why this is'nt allowed anymore. As I said - this Forum / page would lose of creative input.

So please define what excactly is a low quality item / creation before you make these kind of restrictions. And give the users the chance to enhance these items.

Cool. Which ones are you working on?

What do you mean by "enhance", in this context?

I understand the data quality issues caused by a specific group of users but the solution you proposed is even worse. Why don't you shut down equipboard completely to prevent data quality issues at all?

Or perhaps implement a rating system? New comers can't submit new gear. If they have a minimum IQ they are enabled to add new gear. But if someone introduces data quality issues, and other users report incorrect data, you simply remove the entry and give the person a strike and prevent them from posting new gear again (for a while)?

@ro5, what bothers you most re: the new system?

Is your #1 concern that it will complicate your ability to add rare/obscure/boutique gear to artists?

...or are your concerns more about restrictions to what you can add to your own Equipboard and wishlist?

Ok here's what happens a LOT that we have to put a stop to.

Someone adds an item that is hyper-specific, like a guitar with the exact year and neck and color or something, or like a pedal they DIY modded and thus make a new entry for it.

Then, they save that item to their Equipboard.

That item is SO niche, it just sits there for months/years and does not accrue any ratings, reviews, artist usage, viable alternatives, etc. Over time, we've accumulated quite a few items like this in the database, and as a business that relies on search engines (like Google) thinking we have a high quality website, these types of item pages are considered "thin" and low quality. Like, they add no value, really.

So in a way, it's our problem, that has now become your problem because you're not happy with our initial solution 😆 But he we're here to collaborate. We have made a lot of changes responding to user feedback, so I'd love to find a good solution together. We're all ears.

Maybe something like this thread is the solution? I get the problem and I do think most of the DIY stuff shouldn't be on here. Maybe if the DIY thing is made from a kit we can put the kit in as a product? This already happens. I 've put this set https://equipboard.com/items/harley-benton-electric-guitar-kit-st-style into my collection. Not because I own the set, but a guitar made from it. I guess most gear we might want to add is either available new at one of the big retailers or on reverb, since most of the smaller boutique builders also sell through reverb. The rest can be added by the mods manually. I get this is additional work for the mods, but far less than having to deal with the hundreds of reports for low quality items. Maybe add a link to the "Add new item" page?
