Fender Jazzmaster, Jaguar or Mustang?

Hey guys, I have an es-335 and a strat. I am looking for an in-between guitar where i can have a strat sound but a strat looking guitar. Could anyone steer me to which one i should buy. . . Thanks.

A strat looking guitar that sounds like a strat.... Go for a strat :)

I hear a lot of guitarists go for the Mustangs but to be fair, it may not be for tonal reason but rather popular opinion.

I like Jaguars due to their flexibility with settings. All the extra switches makes it like an old Cadillac.

I would say to get a Fender for the slimmer neck profile and then change out the pickups for a set that closer resembles a Gibson tone.... or even drop in some Gibson pups.

Jazzmaster is my vote. Absolutely gorgeous guitars, and they sound killer. The Troy Van Leeuwen one is a beauty:

Having said that, I think you can find a killer Mustang for less money - Jazzmasters can get pricey. A mustang is more minimal for sure. They both have swagger... OK buy both 😄

GEAR:
  • Fender Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar
  • Big Ear Pedals Woodcutter
  • HeadRush FRFR Go Portable Desktop Amplifier

The TVL Jazzmaster linked above plays like a dream. I spent hours jamming on one at a store recently.

In the end I bought a Squire J. Mascis Jazzmaster, which costs about 35% as much and also plays and sounds great. Love that guitar: http://equipboard.com/items/squier-j-mascis-jazzmaster?src=pim_name

I play a Jazzmaster and have played many Jazzmasters, and they sound absolutely nothing like a Strat. The Jaguar does sound a bit more Strat-y, but out of the three, the Mustang sounds the most like a Strat. I used to own a mustang as well. The Mustang bridges are a pain in the butt to mess with, but they're cool guitars.

(But all three guitars sound freakin awesome, just not very strat-like)

Por mucho prefiero la jaguar y la mustang la jaguar tiene un sonido asesino y la mustang muy buena con reverb las jazzmaster no se por que no me gustan

Do you like short scale or full scale. Jags and Stangs are 24", the Jazzmaster has the strat/tele 25.5"

All 3 are very different.

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

Also, the Jazzmaster has the least strat-like pickups and sounds unlike a strat, but the scale makes the Jag and Mustang sound really different from the strat. And none of them have a strat bridge/trem. Strats sound a lot like strats.

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

Usually, I'd go for a Jazzmaster, especially the Troy Van Leeuwen model. But I really like those HH Japanese Jaguars.

Close your eyes, have someone hand you guitars one at a time, buy the one that sounds and plays the best. This way you get the guitar that YOU want.

  • Fender MIJ Jazzmaster JM62
  • Epiphone Dot
  • Electro-Harmonix Sovtek "Green Russian" Big Muff Pi V7C
