Accordion

Aside from messing with by Grandfather's as a kid when my family visited Newfoundland in the summer, not much. It'd be fun to learn though. He had an accordian, my Grandmother had a church organ in the house, and my uncle had an old Strat copy he had kicking around. All of those things likely got me on the path to learn how to make music.

Beginners guide

You've made three separate threads looking for advice on the bodhrán. The forum, while does have posters, isn't what I'd call "highly active. That, and the bodhrán is a VERY niche instrument outside Ireland and other areas where Celtic music is prominent (Scotland, Atlantic Canada, New England, etc.). Making a new thread every day or two won't get you information faster. There may be someone here who has experience with the bodhrán, but if you're looking for a fast answer you may have better luck in a forum or social media group dedicated to Celtic instruments.

The Hello-Thread: Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself 👋

Been around for a bit now, but may as well pop something in here.

Name's Jamie MacDonald. I'm from Nova Scotia and play both guitar and bass. I've been somewhat slack the past couple of years with music stuff, but I started getting back into it again this spring and finally got a proper rig again. I've played Death Metal/Grindcore/Sludge Metal, Hardcore/Metalcore, and Post-Hardcore/Punk. Listen to tons of stuff outside of that (hip-hop, classic rock, other forms of heavy music, celtic folk), but that's mainly what I like to play.

A couple selections of recordings:

Current solo project - "Feral Hog" (Sludge/Punk/Noise Rock)

Current solo project - "Scentless Apprentice (instrumental Nirvana cover)" (Sludge/Punk/Noise Rock)

Sierra Falls (Bass/backing vocals) - "When Bears Attack!" (Post-Hardcore)

Black Anchor (lead vocals) - "Kerosene Dreams" jam demo (Hardcore)

Help with the Epiphone Casino!

Full disclosure, I have zero experience with painting/finishing guitars, but I did a quick search and found this video you might find helpful: Video link

If it was me, I'd probably get it professionally done unless it was a guitar I didn't care too much about as I have no idea what I'm doing. If you do want to tackle it yourself, it does look like there's a good few resources online.

Are the mods still around?

Just wanted to check in on this as there's quite a backlog in the gear add request thread. I totally understand the time thing, people have lives/jobs/families/etc. Do you guys maybe need some help? Maybe a couple of members could act as temporary mods to go over the back log of gear, double-check for duplicates, etc. I wouldn't mind helping out for a couple of weeks to help clean that up a bit.

Are the mods still around?

Not sure what the back end looks like, but Reverb links only use product pages which seems to cause a bit of a bottleneck. No idea how easy or difficult it would be to modify it to allow for listing links as well as product pages, but that would reduce the need to add products from some smaller companies. ex: I have a few GUPTech pedals (smaller company from Canada) that I requested to be added. They have listing pages on Reverb but not product pages, so I can't add them myself with the tool. The only caveat with that is that may cause an increase in duplicate listings.

Tube amp for harsh noise/shoegaze/thall/funeral doom metal/black metal/free jazz/powerviolence

Something like an Orange Rockerverb 100 will likely do the job for you. Matt Pike from Sleep/High on Fire (who used the Green Matamps in Sleep) and Boris, both sludgy/doomy artists, use or have used Rockerverbs. While not djenty, Jim Root from Slipknot also uses one to get a more modern metal tone. There's really not a lot you can't do with them as far as heavy or loud music goes. They clean up decently as well, so they should have no problem with jazzy/mathy stuff either. 100w should be more than enough in pretty much every live application. 100w tube amps are enormously loud. Any smaller venues will have the sound guy ready to fist fight you if you don't turn it down, and larger venues will likely have a PA that you can mic your cab and hook into.

Tube amp for harsh noise/shoegaze/thall/funeral doom metal/black metal/free jazz/powerviolence

The Randall isn't a tube amp. That being said, are you set on a tube amp? If not, it should do most of what you want.

Do you have a music store handy to try some amps out. A lot of the genres you listed (namely noise, shoegaze, doom, black metal, powerviolence) aren't super picky for amp selection. You'll basically just need volume and gain, so finding something to your taste will be more important than anything. As far as I know, thall is basically djent (correct me if I'm wrong)? If so, you may need to be a bit more specific with that as you'll want a tighter tone. The Randalls and Oranges should get you that no problem, especially if you put a TS-style overdrive in front, but something like the Sunn will likely be more equipped to handle the nosier stuff like doom/black metal/powerviolence/etc.

New to Equipboard? Dazed? Confused? Start here. 😎

Aggressive distortion will help quite a bit. I know a few bass players will also use guitar amp heads as well. Guitar speakers can get pretty messed up from basses, though, so you'll want to use bass cabs/speakers.

What's the most you would spend on an Overdrive pedal?

At this point, probably $100CAD. I got my Boss SD-1 for $40, and I'm very happy with that. If there was a smaller company I wanted to support I could maybe stretch that to $150, but that's the hard limit.
