This circa 1942 contact print of press photos (archived by the Library of Congress) is the only known photographic record of Lead Belly's "windjammer", which is discussed at length in the 1994 essay "Leadbelly and His Windjammer: Examining the African American Button Accordion Tradition" by Jared Snyder. Woody Guthrie mentioned the accordion in an October 3, 1940 letter to Henrietta Yurchenco, who reprinted the letter in her book A Mighty Hard Road: The Woody Guthrie Story.
Huddie plays a little old $4 accordion and you can actually hear the sad note of his people singing in the swamps and jungles and echoing in the Louisiana moss.
