The Squier Standard Precision Bass Special (PJ), particularly the early production years, are very much on par with a MIM. They are available for a lower price than a true Fender product. Do upgrades including pickups, hi-mass bridge, tuning machines, and a new circuit and you can have a very good bass for under $600.
A few of the **original build specifications** will give you an idea of how this compares to a MIM bass.
