Great Bones to Create a Solid PJ Bass
The Squier Standard Precision Bass Special (PJ), particularly the early production years, are very much on par with a MIM. They are available for a lower price than a true Fender product. Do upgrades including pickups, hi-mass bridge, tuning machines, and a new circuit and you can have a very good bass for under $600.
A few of the original build specifications will give you an idea of how this compares to a MIM bass. Body: Agathis, 1 3/4" thick Neck: Maple, Jazz Bass Neck, C-Shape, Poly Finish Fingerboard: Rosewood, 9.5” Radius (241 mm) No. of Frets: 20 Medium Jumbo Scale Length: 34” (864 mm) Width at Nut: 1.500” (38 mm) Machine Heads: Standard Open-Gear Tuners

great squire
I modified this 3 tone sunburst p bass with a lace alumitone p bass middle pickup, seymour duncan quarter pound j bass bridge pickup, EB mud bucker sidewinder neck pickup, and a 6 way switch (6th position is all at once).

Bang for the buck
A solid player with a nice tone for a good price. Best of both worlds, it's basicly a Precision Bass with an added Jazz Bass neck pickup and a Jazz neck.
