HOW MANY HOURS A DAY SHOULD YOU PRACTICE IF YOU WANT TO BE PROFESIONAL

y'know, I just wasn't imagining professional singing being in the guitar section though many guitarists also sing, maybe even providing the lead or sole vocal....

Where do drummers like to hide at night?

why don't you consider a rehearsal space that's more convenient to her? I was in a band that lived all over the philly metro area and beyond but we set a rehearsal space based on affordability and nearly equal distance from all members and everyone was welcome to leave bulky gear there as it was a recording facility that also made the rent with rehearsal rooms on the back of the building. It was cheap to lock out at a monthly rate because that central location happened to be a bad neighborhood a lot of people didn't want to deal with.

The site of your (at least) weekly rehearsal should be convenient for everybody or barring that equally inconvenient to everyone. Furthermore all members should chip in until you can make rehearsal self-funding. You want to establish an LLC or SCorp with equal shares to all members to umbrella even the simplest band functions like owning your van (do not leave it in 1 member's name), insure it and to control your publishing rights, performance copyrights, mechanicals etc. You can sign your LLC up with BMI or ASAP. You will want to incorporate in Delaware for various reasons...any elase needed for rehearsal facilities should be in the company's name just like the van title. All emmbers/shareholders should be authorized to stand as an signatorie for the corporation in non contractual matters in case you need to sign something to do with the van or a lease.... anyway, I could go on. A little organization will help you keep members because everyone will certainly have a stake....a dn some consideration and fairness is generally a big help in fostering esprit de corps as well.

try begging him back, whatever it is you were doing that drove him off, promise to cut it out... failing that? go to craigslist or whatever and cross your fingers... failing that go to more local shows and buy beers for drummer of established bands and try to convince one to be on your record until you find a permanent guy. Where do drummers hang at night? Usually bars.

Gear Purchases

... Yeah, I'm not good at reviewing. But I like this guitar quite a bit, so there's that.

no you're not, but if you like it that's what counts.... I am sure you made the right call if only for resale.

Vibrato/Whammy Bar on Epiphone Les Paul

that's not a gibby or epi.... that's like when someone asks you what the best apple is retorting with "I like oranges."

I agree with you but that was not the question so go eat an orange while we take in the world's apple varieties. Don't nercropost just to shill for fender. Bad form, BB.

there's one approach, but trump monomaniacal passion? I don't think so. If its just a skill or a way to meet girls (boys, goats, whatever) then you are unworthy.

look at all these hits:

but even when I add "world's most amazing videos" I can't get the TV spot you saw that says fireball of flames because I would sample that.... but I am definitely using my favorite repo man line. above.

okay, I gotta stop dicking around and do some work before school lets out!

HOW MANY HOURS A DAY SHOULD YOU PRACTICE IF YOU WANT TO BE PROFESIONAL

I can't even tell you the number of times I was sitting in bed late at night practicing as a boy and woke up slumped over a strat and almost missed the bus to highschool....

when I was in one band that rented a big house to live in and practice at I continued playing guitar whenever I was home to the point where the band would decide to watch a movie but wouldn't let me near the couch if I didn't put the guitar down. So I missed a lot of movie nights.

Rosewood v. Maple Fretboards

I was going to say that ypu meant "partial", but apparently impartial fair and just to to a disputant.

I mean, if you reword it a bit, impartial would work, but I think you meant partial.

oh god, the angry grammarian returns.... we all understood him, no reason to nitpick his inappropriate antonym... I would like you better if you weren't such a petulant school marm

Rosewood v. Maple Fretboards

I have a couple of all the common woods (2 maple, 4 or 5 rosewood and 3 ebony I think), I like all of them. I will say my old 70s Greco which has dense and slippery brazilian rosewood (that you can't get anymore because its almost extinct) feels better than indian rosewood. I hate to be THAT guy who says they don't have great wood like they used to but brazillian rosewood is really a nice material that's unlike most of the indian rosewood we have now and yet still unlike ebony. But its a small thing. My tele has a really unusual piece of indian rosewood on it that's really smooth and slippery with a wide swirly grain compared to my other indian rosewood fretboards. Its fast and waxy slick and has some very unusual grain coloring... I often wonder if they got some other wood mixed in with the indian rosewood at fender that month and threw it on the necks anyway. I actually bought that neck basednon how pretty the fretboard looked in the ebay picture and it just happened to be a really great feeling fingerboard totally unlike my SGs for instance that have the short grain, porous feel and dark brown color you will all expect from indian rosewood.

Fingerboard material is probably the last thing I think about when selecting a guitar to record something with though. In feel I am thinking about neck profile and then I am also thinking about the electronics and general resonance of the body for tone. I just don't find that the fingerboard material effects my playing.... the fingerboard radius and neck shape have way more influence on how I approach a part. But when I only had a couple guitars I didn't even think about those factors either and my recordings and shows went fine. This is just a nitpicky detail.

HOW MANY HOURS A DAY SHOULD YOU PRACTICE IF YOU WANT TO BE PROFESIONAL

It occurs to me that if you need to ask how much you should practice then you need to practice more... sometimes this can be unstructured. I still enjoy watching TV with a guitar and seeing how fast I can start playing the melody or chords to snippets of music on TV, theme songs, incidental music, commercial jingles.... ear/hand training. Eventually practice becomes less essential. I seldom formally practice like I sued to and while I am not as good as I once was I am not THAT much worse. Maybe I have long ago capped 10k hours? No idea. Ramping up my formal and directed practice from next to nothing would be sufficient to regain the 5 to 10% I've lost since leaving the professional sphere (I am rusty at thigns outside of my chosen stylistic avenues like tapping, sweep arpeggios or some variations of travis picking and chickin' pickin' -- in order to execute one of those parts I need to practice it a few times for a couple days to regain the muscle memory). But in the beginning the answer is A LOT.... anyone who says otherwise is content with a limited guitar skill set and that's okay. That won't even keep you from being a professional in some senses of the word....but a professional side man ready for any oddball part thrown at him? Constant practice tog et tuned up to be good enough and then a reasonable amount of maintenance to keep yourself in tip top shape so that you never get it wrong at an audition.

For me? I really like to play the guitar and I would play more if I had more free time. Practice, structured or freeform NEVER felt like practice to me or a chore in any way. It was a joy and a privilege and I couldn't hazard a guess at how many hours I spent with my guitars. I still seldom pass a day without playing something for a few minutes when I can squeeze it in. When I worked in a structured office I kept a tele in a locked closet... when I am doing other things I often just hold a guitar and noodle a little to focus my thoughts on the task at hand. My guitars are an extension of my arms and of my brain.

HOW MANY HOURS A DAY SHOULD YOU PRACTICE IF YOU WANT TO BE PROFESIONAL

Never put your guitar down. Sleep with a metronome under your pillow. Play with others twice a week on one of those occasions make it a jam with different folks doing music outside your taste spectrum. Live this lifestyle for at least a decade.

Now for the tangent... I think beer is a bettet guitar practice beverage than wine or whiskey.... But at a show?

I remember seeing them around '99 and they most certainly did use fire as a source of rhythm.

I'll have to think about smashing some random objects with contact mics on them... its been awhile.

I dunno, I'm not tied to anything yet.... I just quick created a verse pattern that made me think fireball of flames. Its whatever.

I'm just against referencing fire, balls or fireballs of flame in a rockabilly song because, well, jerry and johnny? they own fiery lyrics of flame in that context, the comparison is inevitable no matter what your lyrics actually are. No fly zone. You probably thought of it because fireballs are so associated with rockabilly. Even modern psychobilly.... reverend Horton HEAT anyone?

9yover 9 years ago

I just thought the fireball of flames was Trump.... its not only a phrase at his 3rd grade reading level but its also kinda descriptive of his demagogic twitter persona and administration.

I have a drum groove built up real fast at 100ish.... I have a bass lick for a verse in Em. I don't know if it goes with terry's lyrics and melody but hey, all eh gave me was a guitar part that reminded me a little of the cars... seemed like more of a chorus too, way too happy for a verse

I was imagining a slowly tumbling fireball, not careening down a hill so much as maybe creeping up on you like... http://i.imgur.com/agWKoFc.jpg

Strange source of inspiration

oh, I just emailed you back.... need a vocal to have any opinion. Its just a pop guitar lick right now

I was honestly expecting something more fiery.... like one ofthose fireballs of flames?

whats the tempo?

9yover 9 years ago

I need a vocal on a lyrics first song like this or I won't know what I can do with it.

you guys have all day. I'm not going tog et anything done during my day time because I am working and I wanna finish my spring cleaning if possible when I'm done with the day job. I really thought music and beer would be a night time thing for me. you can sing into a webcam mic for all I care... I just wanna hear how it goes, learn it on guitar and then deconstruct it

9yover 9 years ago

Strange source of inspiration

okay, whoever records a demo 1st sendit to me.... I work from home. I can listen and start thinking about it whenever and if you get me something before 6pm my time (Philadelphia, its 9:15am right now) I'll start getting some bones after me and Lu have dinner. I bought beer over the weekend so I'm in a really good music creation place with beer and gadgetry abounding.
