Strange source of inspiration

Maybe if you sing it so I can hear what you mean. Nothing apart from the lyrics says fireball of flames. Nor should it be a rockabilly song given the fact that there are 2 great fire related rockabilly songs one of which is great BALLS of fire and the other one is ring of fire.

Get me s1st draft lyric ans some chord changes demoed w/vocals. 1 mic on voice and acoustic and a lead sheet will do it. I will kick it up and produce it up and wong back to you to sing then I will give it the a list mix.

Be orepared for me to edit the shit outta you. Don't be precious. I will rewrite and rearrange it , give it the compisitional and studio jim-ism.

rosewood is best cause i said so end of story

I'll go with that too.

Rosewood v. Maple Fretboards

I enjoy rosewood more especially when some maple Fretboards are covered in varnish. I enjoy the more oily, woody feel and personally I find rosewood more pleasing to the eye.

I'll go with that... I really want a kingwood fingerboard. Next guitar I build is having kingwood.

I think its funny in a sad way.... it would definitely be satirical and the faux band name would be "The Hell's Satans" like Homer's biker gang in simpsons.

"Fireball of Flames" by The Hell's Satans

get crackin' Terry!!!!

actually this is the sort of thing that Donald Trump would say.... maybe the song is about President Trump and HE is the fireball of flames....

okay, maybe I can do this, but I need Terry to help... I'm not going this one alone

How do you CREATE?

I'll reveal two of my methods, the ones I do for every song.... I don't touch an instrument or try singing until I have a really good idea how the song goes in my head -- this can be an hour or two of thinking about it or it can be months with it on the backburner. A lot of time I will have a huge chunk of arrangement visualized before I touch a guitar or piano too... at that point I sacrifice livestock to Baal and pray that my song is easy to arrange and record and that I can find someone to help me with lyrics and hopefully sing it because I hate writing lyrics and I can barely sing, its more of a croak to my ear when I play my voice back....

I actually recommend everyone do their songwriting in some sort of committee fashion whenever possible and especially when starting out (the 1st 10 years). Be it a band, a Motown style team or a words and music team, having a 2nd or 3rd opinion and source of ideas is never a bad thing! I like to send stuff to some of my friends and get feedback when I am writing alone (including Tel_Nobody, the OP).

Song structures.... know the different types of established formats going back to medieval jongleurs and Norwegian skalds. Know whats been done, what people identify with and how you can work within those formats, adapt them, combine them or beak them all to pieces. Listen to EVERYTHING including, NO ESPECIALLY stuff you don't like.

Steal from people.... if its done with reverence and subtlety its called homage ;-) If you borrow an idea from one style to feed another its called innovation!

Another thing I do every song is trust my gut on the hook and build around that in my head. The hook can be anything that's memorable, sometimes a rhythmic device. its usually the best or ONLY part of your initial idea. You should mirror it and expand on it wherever possible in the song.... if you are imagining it as a drum break try putting it to a chord change (syncopate, arpeggiate), if its a vocal try it on guitar.... if its a synth riff sing it with some nonsense words. In fact, don't do that, just imagine doing that. The less you touch an instrument the better I find. The mechanics get in the way and dilute your ideas.

This is a daunting topic.

I am less tickled by that phrase than you are... its kinda depressing that anyone would be dumb enough to point out that a fireball is composed mainly of flames. Why don't you write this one Terry? It seems like its already inspiring you.

Let's help each others!

there's a lot of open collaboration and just exchanging/critiquing of tracks going on ehre already.... definitely not just confined to EDM.... thing is its a lot exchanging through google drive and stuff like that lately and a lot of the talk is through private email.... when we are talking about what we're working on in this forum it tends to be via thread hijacks.... check out the 'what's your studio setup' thread in the general section.... just peruse the general section, song creation, recording and mixing are constant topics of conversation and there's a real meeting of the minds between people from different worlds like hiphop guys, rock guys, dance guys.... or me who is all and none of the above. The DJ/Electronic board ahs been low on traffic this year though.... also populate your personal equipboard with your gear, write some reviews and make some submissions. That will help you build an EB identity.

I followed your soundcloud.... are you relatively new to electronic music (2 years or less)?

9yover 9 years ago

Rosewood v. Maple Fretboards

All of that is nonsense on borh sides. Bends are not ever hard on any guitar, any gauge string. I don't even try to bend. I kust bend and vibe whenever i need expression w/o thinking, it just comes out. Notes, chords. Whatever. If you think about it you're fucking it up. Tyrn your brain off and play the thing.

How do you CREATE?

okay, I kinda took the piss here, but its different for every song.... sometimes I don't sacrifice a goat and I just sacrifice a chicken.

I wake up with an idea for a song, sacrifice a goat and then? Its done.

OFF TOPIC

I got hit in my very early 20s, they had just lowered the limit in PA and I was just under the old limit.... I strove really hard to beat the rap and did for the very reason that I had already been to Canada both as a spontaneous roadtrip in art school and more importantly on tour and I was afraid of being denied future admission while I was riding in a tour bus

it actually wound up serving me really well to have a squeaky clean record when I was in my child custody battle a few years ago too

whats funny is that in negotiating my way out of the DUI hit I wound up getting out of the speeding ticket that came with it and speeding was the reason I got pulled over.... I was dead guilty of going WAY over the limit but I was really not impaired though I ahd been drinking a little with a buddy hours beforehand, just a reckless 22 or 23 year old kid with a lead foot and his first manual transmission!

Rosewood v. Maple Fretboards

For fuck's sake, yes, please.

if you were local to me you could hire me for 1 sunday to sort out your sound.... I'd mix one show and if you were all happy I would straighten your mouthy soundman out or die trying.... at the least I would set everything up right, gaff tape amp, mic stand and drum position marks on the stage and create recall sheets for every piece of gear, some on a song per song basis and I would makesome recommendations for new additions to the FOH arsenal if needed. I would also work on your stage monitoring making it more holistic with your stage volume. I find a small stage does well with a good amount of bass, kick, snare and vocal in the wedges letting the guitar and keys people msuter some stage level to hear themselves and be heard. It also makes life easier notching out monitor feedback so you can get the band's sound nice and loud for them (sometimes louder than the house mix in the mains LOL) I am sure I could make a great mix with whatever you guys have with all of you maintaining reasonable stage volume to hear eachother but not enough to offend your audience or detract from the spiritual setting...

sadly, LA is pretty far from me and I don't like going there anyway. You should get someone local to help out for a day. Talk to your pastor about it. If you go on prosoundweb you'll find a directory of P&W mixers who do really pro quality sound for the super big churches that dot the USA (at least they sued to have a directory)a and you should just contact one of them and get him for 2 sessions, a rehearsal to set up and a sunday to get a baseline mix on the revised setup. These guys are often former secular soundmen who know their shit and will work with you and the music, not try to push everyone around and make the music into what he thinks it should be. A music director is 1 job, an FOH mixer is another and the guys who do the high end church gigs usually know this. I think having a pro adjust the install, position the band optimally and get the sound working right is well worth the money. You guys seem super frustrated with things as they are, talk to the boss and see what kinda budget he can allocate.... maybe make a point of discussing it so folks will dump a lil extra in the collection plate? The nice thing about religious music is the audience is sued to making donations whereas in a small secular gig you are lucky to get paid these days even if there's a cover charge.

9yover 9 years ago

Rosewood v. Maple Fretboards

I can't imagine noodling helping that song along.... maybe a full blown gospel rhythm section and some horn players.... fat ladies with tambourines. Nah. The sparseness seemed appropriate to a whitebread church setting to me though....

I really like that girl's voice, she's really wasted on that song and in church in general. Oh well, whatever makes people happy.

9yover 9 years ago

Rosewood v. Maple Fretboards

I gotta say that we don't see a lot of that in secular music.... no showboating here in planet pop/rock/country, we did away with that in the 80s.... however, that song is so crappy when judged by my aesthetic his impromptu drum solo really broke the tedium for me, maybe that P&W drummer knows better than all of us! after the 1st 30 seconds I was ready for a change and I didn't mind having a laugh at the whole thing when he finally busted out on the toms. Who could take something like that seriously unless they were getting paid handsomely to perform it anyway?

can we add another letter to P&W? Like PW&J; praise, worship and jelly? The jelly will sweeten the whole thing up. Who doesn't like jelly?

oh yeah, and fretboards have the least impact on your tone than any other part of an electric guitar.... its there, but its so subtle. Its most obvious on super bright designs like a stock strat. You will typically hear a slight difference between a rosewood slab and finished maple in that context, but its really something you can dial out at the amp its just that subtle on a lot of examples. I was a maple guy for years but more because I liked the feel of the lacquer under my fingers... I warmed up to rosewood though and I prefer the feel of a tight grained slab of rosewood now.... this stuff is just not that important compared to your body wood, bridge materials and electronics. Your bridge has huge impact on the sound of your electric guitar but very few players nerd out about various bridge and saddle materials. Trust me, steel versus brass alone is huge. But there are other materials too. In a strat or tele the mass of the sustain block and pickup surround respectively are a big deal to the sound that's not at all subtle.... to say nothing of their electromagnetic properties.

ebony really isn't more durable... rosewood is less prone to issues than ebony, requires less conditioning... and maple is usually finished in the fender style and its the most durable fretbaord material anyway. Very dense and resistant to finger oils.

and you trust a retailer? when the guys at sweetwater get up in the morning are they thinkig about Blake's signal path or their quarterly bonus? A true tube device, even dual triode devices need 500 volt or higher power rails. do the math! all that indicia is BS.

I am not telling you not to like the pedal, just get real. Don't use marketing propaganda as tech data. The 'servo path' is doing the heavy lifting, its just an IC op amp like a tubescreamer or any dirt pedal.... the tube is still in starved plate mode providing clipping in place of diodes but its not operating like a tube in amp. The starved plate thing is the oldest trick in the book and this is just another variation of it... I admit it can sound quite good out front of your amp. All the marketing stuff in there is pitching an oddball bias point as semthing other than starved plate operation. Its just a refinement of the same old trick. Its actually pulled from prosumer recording gear. There's a reason matchless called their full voltage tube pedal the 'hotbox' though... its not about the gain, they mean it runs at properly 'hot' voltages like an amplifier.

need I add that I am right and everyone who has other ideas is creative but wrong? the music is the band, NOT the soundmen. Respect the band!any sound guy in live sound or recording who feels more important than the artistand band members is WRONG

if you don't like that music get another gig, they know what they're about and its your job to represent in best 'perspective'

I also used t do sound every sunday for a whoop-ass gospel church... black Baptists. The band loved me because I worked WITH THEM to reach the congregation. Not trying to contain and limit the players but HELP THEM reach the back of the hall. And if they didn't need help? then mute them and let their in-phase speakers reach back with my mix. I want every musician to feel comfortable, be happy and play their best. This philosophy inevitably benefits the audience.

Lucian... I'm too vein to post just anything!

but look, its sound reinforcement. You line the amp speakers up with the kick drum head, take the barometric pressure and temp and determine speed of sound that day n that space w/al'il wiggle room for the warm boddy effect.. and you make that sight line for speakres and kick 360 ngthat yudegrees off from the speaker so you can reinforce w/o cancellation... failing that you go 180 and flip phase on the 2bus to the amp! easy. Its sound REINFORCEMENT!!!!!!!!!

Haha, my sound guy means well, but he can act like a complete ass when there's no reason to be. Anytime something goes wrong, he's pretty quick to blame someone and get angry before he has all the facts. Hell, he got pissed when someone put a case close to a rack monitor, saying it "broke the cables" or something like that. None of the cables are broken, though.

hows jesus feel about his baditude? I've worked 6 figure and higher sessions where time is money and seen no attitude in similar situations, there was no attitude when shit went bad on th warped tour when I was a monitor mixer.... your sound guy is not a Christian... or a human. I'm gonna fight him... but I'll let him live... and I'll fix your FOH! but I make 35 USD an hour just to get started. If you're goodat something never do it for free!

his problem is napoleon syndrome. he doesn't know what the fuck he;s doing and doesn't want to own up to it, but its easier to give you all shit an maintain the image of his mixerliness in his mind than works with you guys and own up to being an amateur and a dick!.... aparently god is not reaching out to him to help him be a bigger person in the grand JC tradition.... because god.... well whatever.
