New Job for Me==New Guitar to Celebrate
those are some extremeley eye catching guitars.... I mean, a headless guitar with a stylized koi painted on it?

yeah, album tones are something else.... when I mix I try to respect the recorded sound as well as the live sound of the band (before covid, now I have to guess and hope the tracking engineer did right) but if its just not happenin' I might get pretty aggressive with EQ or even compress.... not to mention I usually have guitar going at least a little into one or more parallel group compression busses that color the sound as everything hitting the bus will push and pull that circuitry and there's typically like some transformers and maybe inductors in the path.... and that's just if you can pick out 1 guitar part to reference because there might be layers as you point out.

weird, we love all our local scots in philly.... now we might call them irish to piss them off but that's just philly's version of love

ribbons are mostly figure 8, I assume the woodpecker is, never used one... so the figure 8 is the sides, can be top or bottom, not important...the cardioid mic is mid.... you'll mult the figure 8 and flip phase onthe double and then balance those against the cardioid mic to vary the amount of stereo and mono information and develop an image that represents the source the way you want
5yover 5 years ago
you cna get an idea by looking at their equipboards.... page Hamilton for example has very little gear on there and he gravitates toward gain banging amps which gives you a clue.... lowest gain head he ever used was an 800.... he's got like 2 distortion pedals? I think these days he uses an axe fx or soemthing like that right to the desk, but we're talking simplistic, so the amp is doing the work
if you're looking to cop that kind of tone you need to look at what you have at your disposal... if you're new and you have a solid state practice amp that's probably not going to do what you want and its time to amp shop...

Modular Eurorack for Ambient Sounds?
Again, sorry for delayed responses--likely going to be in and out over this coming year--my health is... well... If I make it it to 2022, I'll consider it a win.
focus on that win, I'm pulling for you

no no, the mid mic should NOT be a ribbon, that's figure 8, you need cardioid for mid, so a condenser typically

for my buck I'm saying all macs are the same and its probably a 305 and a D1500, the 1500 has no resale even today.... we need some good photos, just 1 great shot to confirm the delay.... the PEQ forget it, they're identical unless you cna read the model#

that sounds almost believable but why would Kitsune be able tog et them into Daft Punk's space? I don't share keys with my neighbors!!!!
what's weird about Daft Punk's anonymity is everyone knows who theya re we just don't know precisely what they look like as adults.... maybe they're secretly lepers

I keeps staring at this and its just a blur, there's something with 2 LCDs or 2 very bright VUs (more likely).... it occurs to me 2 LCDs could be a numark dual CD player for DJs, I would see thema round in the 90s at goth industrial nights where vinyl was not used anymore....
With English subtitles:
I love their swipes at DJing

Agreed.
The internet is still holding back on us. More photographic and journalistic evidence is out there. I can smell it.
One of the lurkers on this thread just has to have something juicy.
Come join the party, folks!
Finley threw down with a great source there.... and its a really left field item, even for their intended purpose these aren't widely known. I'm realizing these guys are like the thrift store fashionistas of gear... the equivalent of that hot girl from college with the mixed up wardrobe that was SO cool....
someone else show us your pics! we're KILLING it here.... unmasking da funk

oh well, I think Thomas B has the final word on how to use it! No one else should use one of these, even for guitar. Now with this and the Dynamite I need one more unassisted Daft Punk sighting for a triple crown here....

I can out drug story any of you, I ingested chemicals without street names in my 20s.... what's the point again? my wife died of a phentanyl OD.... this isn't that coool an analogy.

And (hint hint something we're working on as we speak) ... what genres do people that use this gear make?
there's genre specific gear, I'm against this idea generally, sure a grunge act wouldn't use a juno, but wow, I use my chorus echo on everything in different ways... a valley dynamite for example is universal and the tubescreamer is a handy pedal for anything from blues to metal... the best pieces are only limited by your thinking
5yover 5 years ago
I would avoid overpaying for an xotic, everything they make is just a mildly tweaked clone my friend.... but they are tweaked, watch your wallet

I think one challenge is I'm speaking to you guys, who both hang out on Equipboard a lot already (thanks for that, by the way). If everyone used Equipboard like you guys, we'd be the biggest site in the world.
I don't get it, I love this site with all my nerdy heart.... its all the info and thought provoking exchange on a good day, man, we cracked a nut on daft punk again today that sheds light on an underappreciated line of guyatone tube pedals... I think we lose people who like to shoot their mouths off and think that ehre unlike gearslutz or gesrpage they can get away with spreading disinformation, if anything we're LESS opinion based, just the facts man
ever think of doing a mentorship program? the studio system is dead but I learned so much as an assistant, maybe there's a way to pay it forward on the internet
what about partnering with modulargrid or like a pedalboard sight????
I'm between records which is a huge downtime for me to think about stuff like this, the shadow band will NEVER finish their vocals and I'm just doing midi stuff on trash godz to get to a point where I can mix like I want but I have my ups and downs

Video demos! The review section and forums are useful for that already, but I could see it expanding into Jim's "freshman lab" concept.
I appreciate someone read that, I think its a solid idea.... let the new guys help the new guys and provide them with a basic text too
I mean there's kids up on this sight who don't know shit from shinola in the words of R Lee Ermy.... I think that was him.... but its not like I knew what I was doing at that age, I just didn't have a forum to mouth off on and I didn't have any choice but to experiment and get books, the itnernet didn't become a real resource until Iw as in my 20s and had some shit together already

Should I get a Strymon Iridium?
but I always look at resale for new digital technology, the rate of improvement is so rapid I shy away from big purchases, I try to ask if something will be a timeless sound soon or if its flavor of the week.... when the lexicon PCM series came up used it was a good buy because they were in service everywhere still but some guys replaced them so it was going to come back in and it has a SOUND.... even a lowly alesis microverb is a good example of soemthing that's vibin' even though its outdated.... the line 6 modelers are a great example, how many green delays you see? you could see that was a game changer even though it was a middling sound, it had it right at your toes, its been bettered but is just now going obsolete and maintains surprisingly good resale in the age of strymon and toneprint. An analog chorus or delay is a great call as chips go in and out of production they're a good bet. In recording I invested paltry sums in symetrix and orban gear that's now quite valuable because that late 80s broadcast shit is made to a high standard and does its work without coloring the sound a lot which CAN be desirable.... I've dropped the ball too, but mostly I get what's a lasting piece due to utility or uniqueness. I could be missing the boat on the IRidium, but I have a feeling its not a future classic, its in a sea of competitors too. That's not a good sign for resale.
when money is an object be smart and get something that you MUST have or something that will do its work and be a resale item long after its outdated because its a unique piece.... who knows how long the strymon name will be on top? Digital is a rough field.
but I'm drinking beer and beating up my kid in super smash bros, so what do I know today?
5yover 5 years ago
I mean, no one ever records correctly anymore, its amateur hour.... I could run video in my home studio continuously and hopefully show people what they're missing out on or misunderstanding from videos but its a video so the same thing will go on where they replicate my settings with plugins on stuff that's not really the same.... that's what I hear is guys doing exactly what they saw without hearing their material.... first you have to assess the source material, then there's probem solving and once the hurdles are overcome there's creativity or not if its not needed and the material speaks loudly with a good balance... its hard to teach sensitivity and taste and I'm still learning every time I sit down to work

Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.
that's a good deal for a pedal with a dual triode these days
and hat's a highly speculative price, more realistic would be $99 free ship

or studying how the gear I already own behaves.
yeah, I agree Tom, when you're using your stuff try every extreme knob combination and everything in between and make note of the interaction with your amp, guitar, other stuff, how does a microphone hear it versus your ears and how does it change when you stand far away from the speaker. When I'm handling a new piece of gear of any kind I really see what it can do at extreme settings. Its never too late to get out gear you've had all along and try using it stupidly to understand it and discover new applications.
the old fender amp manuals told you to be cautious turning your amp up because they had extra gain for low output pickups and a hotter guitar could produce unmusical harmonic distortion because of the wide gain range..... just think if everyone had lsitened to Leo what music would sound like today!

Should I get a Strymon Iridium?
but as to your question about the Iridium, I wouldn't do it, if it comes out of your actual amp budget its wasteful and it'll be yesterdays news soon enough when the next gen comes along and blows it outta the water. Although Iw as looking at it as an IR host for live room IRs to use with my analog mix rig, there it'll make sense but this is like a stop gap for you and is that worth the scratch?
