I;m going to run my machine into the dirt for 3 years and then the ARMs will be there... but I have SERIOUS D/A channel count usually... I'm running 30 outputs at 96k or 192k in various ways most of the time for mixes now so.... yeah there's that. I eat iMacs, ARMed or un ARMed

I'm hoping by then apple considers bringing back AVB support so I can do gigabit audio into the machine without having toshell out for dante... I'll take the open source protocol that can also stream video for my to-picture work any day of the week! It works very well between devices but none of these OSes support it, its nuts

as far as I'm concerned the whole industry is run by piratical dinosaurs

What kind of guitar does Harumi Hosono have in this video?

I think its a Gibson HG00 in black, late 20s to 40s or 50s, tough to say partiularly without a pickguard still on it (I see the glue LOL)... or an LG1 maybe, but that has the neck meet the body after the 12th fret I think, so its probably an HG with those cowboy curves.

EDIT:

see what you think https://reverb.com/item/14436576-1937-gibson-hg-00-gia0654

I feel like I saw this model at the vintage guitar and mandolin store here in philadelphia a while back. Had the round cowboy shoulders like this, black finish, was a wartime model. 40s I think. But the model? UMMMMMMM

try here

EDIT: Its a 00 I think, but its too rounded and cowboyish to be an L00... to my eyes

splendiferous home studio of doom

Is this the official moniker?

the non-homestudio that's more of an art collective space where the trash godz and half my synths land some of my guitars and amps live is Party Headquarters, but we're taking it easy in the pandemic. Everyone is being cautious although i was there last night... I picked up this really sweet tascam deck Mike just serviced up. Anyway... my friend Mike keeps calling my home studio Party Annex

Best Epiphones and Squiers

late 80s and early 90s MIJ squiers are still undervalued. Best guitars in their price range when Iwas a kid. 90s Epi LPs were good when Sammick made them. There are early japanese and korean epi casinos, rivieras, 335s etc not the 70s bolt ones but there are set neck ones with fret nibs and stuff that are really fine guitars.

In new stuff? ummm... you can get some passable stuff I guess. Stay away from china apart from the vintage vibe series from 10 years ago... indonesia is sketchy, play before pay. Some of the indonesian guitars start out good enough but deteriorate on the ocean voyage to the USA. They absorb moisture, dry back out, and it seems like there's bad fret work. For awhile though every sub-korean guitar from fender and epi needed fret dressing but its getting better. This was never a problem in the past.

Kinda like having computer issues back in the day then Apple comes along in the early 00’ and just replaces anything you gotta issue with on the spot no questions asked (that’s faded since sadly) but yep- that’s Ableton now.

I went back to PC years ago when mac went intel.... I almost went back this year but got an obscene Dell workstation and just optimized it myself and with high sierra giving my friends headaches I haven't looked back... I do have a multi boot setup with linux for day job (ha! we're still closed) windows and when mac gets their act together with every plugin manufacturer on the new OS I'll add a mac boot becaue its better for protools and in case I wanna do Logic (grrr, I miss emagic)

I' m curious about these new mini macs and where that's going for the power macs, but the whole system is not upgradeable, classic apple bullshit.

The Hello-Thread: Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself πŸ‘‹

I bought live 10 recently after resisting ebcause of the upgrade to 11 which is loaded with CV features for my vintage and eurorack gear.... if its still on sale its worth it.

I also had my best friend buy me cubase 11because he's in cubase and he wants me to mix his triphop stuff in cubase and I have to say it runs well and is pretty good these days.... it still took awhile to get it to see all 30 of my outs and understand where my monitor bus was because of its old school routing system but the original VST system is still going strong in 11... I initially tried the artist demo to see if I could open these older SX2 projects before buying and there is NOTHING wrong with artist. It loses a few unimportant features for most people and costs less. I wasn't so expensive because Iw as upgrading from 8 so we did Pro, but Artist ispretty close. I honestly don't know that I need Pro to mix hybrid.

Comparing the 2, cubase is much better for recording long audio, ableton is great fr midi, looping etc but in a different way than FL studio... cubase can't touch the stock instruments in ableton but it has better channel EQ and compression options built right in like Harrison 32C if you need that. Cubase eats every other native solution for plugin and outboard latency compensation at a channel and bus level. We looped a tape delay trough out of my 24Ao into my 828 all wet and it compensated all the other tracks when i told it it to and if I adjusted the D time it tried to keep up with minimal gltching. Granted my system is down to like 3 to 5ms round trip now, but I added like 50ms to 200 LOL usnteady, its a loose 1/8" dictaphone tape!

Is it necessary for a musician to know the theory?

I think I'm going to get reductive and make analogy... is it necessary for a driver to know how cars work? No...unless hes a racecar driver. Then he might need to be Shelby. At least understanding the basics and the terminology will be mprove his interactions with the pit crew even if his driving remains intuitive.

So let me boil this down, you're proposing Lizzo is not the new Debussy?

5yover 5 years ago

Is it necessary for a musician to know the theory?

Just taking an interest in what's good about music you arent personally drawn to is step one... then you need to make a fearless musical invetory....

HEY KIDS! Let Uncle Jim mix your band's next recording.

Depends. For simple 3 to 5 piece rock bands who have reasonably decent multitracks and have already edited and comped takes I would do 50 bucks a song. If you want to make abbey road and need production work? More. Sound design for midi? More. So like 50 to 250 a song. I'm bored and would enjoy doing whatever, man. I started here because I can do blowout rates for a rock band. I can mix a competently recorded rock song in like 2 to 8 hours. Some of which is setup.

hey man, ask your school if they have any broadcast EQs, compressors or limiters the radio station isn't using.... obsolete stuff... anything made by RCA, the US government under the name federal or dept of commerce or FCC equipment, gates, CBS labs, thomson labs, orban or texar. Symetrix 5 series gear is good too but I have a lot of that. If they can't pay me they could trade me. I love old radio equipment and use it heavily on big projects. It can be non-functioning. I'll fix it.

Is it necessary for a musician to know the theory?

"WTF is a Maj7th chord?" is lumped in with the more actually-theoretical stuff.

Contains the most useful and versatile harmonic interval ever? from Billy Joel to doves to Psycho you cant beat it.

But that's just one nerd's opinion. And if you're not a nerd you dont need to be here.

5yover 5 years ago

Is it necessary for a musician to know the theory?

Agreed on all points. But I think they mean theory as in the 'scientific model' definition ... it's pretty well proved and codified into a a perfectly logical model like newtonian mechanics...

Edit: some of the theory you're talking about is more a crossover between philosophy (aesthetics), musicology and psychoacoustics.

And defining it that way is both taxonomy and epistemology.
