WAVE IN HEAD

The Pulse is actually meant to be a Minimoog clone with extended features. In fact it has too few in common with the Minimoog to be that. On the other hand it's a great synth with a great filter and a fair amount of features. It isn't too percussive although the envelopes are fast enough to support solid basses. All in all it could make a good Roland with CC control and some memory. Its sound is between screaming , supersoft and emotionally deep, far away from being precise or super vintage while the filter is amazingly singing at high resonance.

Ok, the envelopes are not that good but the sound itself is superb! It has something in it that reminds me of Dotcom synths. All 4 filter cards sound just perfect, especially the SEM type makes a beautiful sound. It delivers everything you need without clean precision (in terms of snappiness) but with brutal warmth and richness. Just sounds expensive! The first revision (the one I have) has CV/Gate in/out. The Gate in crashes the unit's software when it receives too fast triggers, so no audio rate gating possible.

The desktop Evolver is not as punchy, precise or characterful as the famous vintage synths. Its UI is fiddly. Nevertheless it's great fun due to the internal sequencer, the digital osc combined with DCOs, the internal fx and the modulations. Looking from this angle it's yet quite characterful. The sequencer can modulate its own tempo by the way.

I own the late version with the stable oscillator board. I wish I had used it as bass machine more often in the past as it has something very pleasant and full in its tone which is hard to get otherwise. It is more flexible than it looks. The filter is the most characterful one ever. One issue though: resonance is breaking down below about 100 Hz which is typical for Moog. If you want bassdrums use layering or take an oscillator controlled by an external envelope. Or just use the feedback trick and get huge bassy persussions. The squarewave of the oscillators sounds better than in the Model15 in my ears although the Model15 actually does it better in almost all other categories.

Crappy keys suffering from double or triple triggering but soundwise it could be the only machine you ever need because it delivers any basic sound in outstanding quality. Fast envelopes, a strong filter which opens up to the highest highs and resonates over the entire audio spectrum, very flexible modulations, sync, fm (with a character similar to my ARP2600) and lots of other goodies. Vince Clarke was right to choose it as one of his favorite machines.

Mine is orange/black. It sounds darker than the Tonus model, sometimes more imprecise. Depending on your settings it can deliver freaky tones, full basses and wonderful leads though. Audio rate modulations sound more chracterful than on my other synths. The 4072 filter is very special. It can produce great drumsounds and changes its tone as soon as it gets modulated at high rates. Vocal- sounds and "speaking" basses are easy to set up. The reverb tank sounds very "Industrial".

Very strong sounding machine with precise behaviour, superfast to superslow envelopes. More possibilities than one would expect. It surprises even after long years of use. Can sound like other vintage synths or completely unique. All purpose weapon! Some say it's sound is kind of cold, but actually it depends on your settings. It can indeed sound extremely warm, phat and rich. At lower levels you get a very raspy oscillator sound which beats Sequential's Pro One. The filters are superb but in some cases I would like them to open up even more than up to 16kHz. With a little bit of resonance you get that effect though and can emulate a SH2 behaviour.
