Dennis DeYoung
Dennis DeYoung's Gear
Dennis used a four voice Oberheim synth on The Grand Illusion album.
Dennis DeYoung of Styx owned and used an ARP Solina String Ensemble Synthesizer.
Dennis DeYoung of Styx owned and used "a couple" of Oberheim OB-X synthesizers starting with the album Pieces of Eight.
"Nothing like a cranked Marshall and raw synth leads from an Arp 2600 modular synth. Of course, Dennis DeYoung loved the sound of these, but hated the hassle of using the patch cords with no patch preset memory."
Dennis often used a B3 organ in the studio, especially on The Grand Illusion.
Dennis DeYoung of Styx owned and used an ARP Odyssey Synthesizer.
Dennis DeYoung of Styx upgraded to an Oberheim 8 Voice Synthesizer for the album Pieces of Eight.
Dennis can be seen using a Roland Jupiter 8 during the song "Cold War" from the Caught in the Act home video the band Styx released in the 80s.
Dennis often used an ARP Pro Soloist for lead lines in Styx right through Grand Illusion, the first album he also used his new Oberheim Four Voice on too. I actually had him sign mine at one of his solo shows in the past decade.
The only video/film I've been able to find of him playing one was on the song "Sweet Madame Blue" of his show with Styx 4/2/76 Winterland Ballroom San Francisco. Unfortunately there was a bad audio cable or problem with his keyboard in the middle of the performance, and half way through he had to switch to his Hammond. I'd love to find other footage of his using his Pro Soloist which he frequently used until mostly switching to the Oberheim.
For a time in the 70s, the Pro Soloist was one of the main lead instruments in the band Genesis, Styx & Kansas. Perhaps by no accident, 3 of my favorites.
