About

Styx is an American rock band known for its eclectic blend of progressive rock, hard rock, and arena rock, with elements of art rock and rock opera. Formed in Chicago in the early 1970s, the band initially comprised of James "JY" Young (vocals, guitar), Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitar), Chuck Panozzo (bass), John Panozzo (drums), and Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards). Over the years, their lineup has evolved to include members like Todd Sucherman (drums), Lawrence Gowan (vocals, keyboards), and Will Evankovich (guitar). Styx rose to fame with albums like The Grand Illusion and Paradise Theater, becoming the first band to achieve four consecutive triple-platinum albums.

How to Sound Like Styx

Their music often features melodic and intricate guitar work, with Tommy Shaw frequently using guitars like the Gibson 1959 Les Paul and Collings I-30 LC. The band's use of synthesizers, such as the Oberheim OB-X and Mellotron M400, adds a symphonic and textural depth to their sound.
