Max is playing a fretless fender jazz bass in this YouTube video performance of "Simulation Swarm" from Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You on Late Show With Stephen Colbert. He can be seen playing it most clearly at 1:40. It may be the current Fender Player Jazz Bass Fretless because that model comes with a pao ferro fretboard, and the bass Max plays in the video looks like a pau ferro fretboard.
Though he has primarily played a Hofner violin bass in Big Thief, he plays the fretless fender j bass on some songs from Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You.
