Mine is highly modified, with Grover Imperial Tuners, Gibson Fine-Tuning Bridge, and Seymour Duncan JB Humbuckers
I bought it for $50 used in Manchester, New Hampshire. It looked really old, so I opened it up. Sure enough, Maxon, Made in Japan in 1982, JRC 2452 chip. It really does sound incredible.
To me, "transparent" means that it doesn't color your tone. A Tubescreamer colors your tone, bumps the mids, etc., but this pedal keeps your base tone, while adding some beef and sparkle. I use it mainly with a Deluxe Reverb and Super Reverb, and it helps give me the tone I love when those amps are turned up to 6 or 7, but at lower volumes. To me, it truly sounds like those amps breaking up. I haven't heard an overdrive pedal I like this much in a long time, and using it as my first overdrive stage, in front of my Tubescreamer, is absolute magic.
As I said, turn the knob until you love it, set it, forget it.
