Founded by Dave Simmons in 1978 in St Albans, England, Simmons is the pioneering electronic drum company responsible for introducing the world's first fully electronic drum kit. The SDS-V, released in 1981, featured the now-iconic hexagonal pads and a punchy analog sound that became synonymous with 1980s pop and rock music. The drums appeared on recordings by Phil Collins, Prince, Neil Peart of Rush, Rick Allen of Def Leppard, Bill Bruford, Depeche Mode, and countless others across the synth-pop, new wave, and progressive rock scenes.
Simmons followed the SDS-V with increasingly sophisticated instruments, including the SDS-7 with digital sampling capabilities, the hybrid SDS-9, and the high-end SDX console featuring "zone intelligence" and pad layering technology. The original company closed in 1999, but the brand was revived in 2006 under Guitar Center ownership, with Dave Simmons himself returning to the company in 2017. The modern Simmons lineup includes the Titan series of electronic drum kits with tension-adjustable mesh heads, multi-pads, drum amplifiers, and accessories, sold exclusively through Guitar Center and its affiliated retailers.
