He bought a 1970s Gibson J-50 dreadnaught specially for recording The Neon Skyline. >quote "Small parlour guitars are nice and punchy in the mid-range, but recording a dreadnought is better; it’s just way more balanced. It took me a long time to realise that the big guitars I didn’t want to play were actually the ones I wanted on my records."

Hofner (Höfner) 1965 500/1 Violin

Avg price: $2,150.00

In the Trailer video for his album "The Magician" at 00:42, Andy Shauf can be seen using a Höfner-style Violin bass. Quite likely it is the same as the one appearing in the NPR Tiny Desk concert. In the NPR Tiny Desk concert at 08:50, one can see that the neck has binding and the headstock a plastic Höfner logo decal. Therefore it might be even an original 60's Höfner Violin bass. The bass tone in the title song "The Magician" is a classic Höfner Violin bass tone.
