Guitars used by James Hetfield on ...And Justice for All (Remastered)

Solid Body Electric Guitars

James Hetfield ESP Explorer "EET FUK"

The guitar was James' first ESP guitar. He bought the guitar around c.1987 and used it to record parts of And Justice For All. James added the EET FUK logo in 1988 while finishing up the master recording for the album it also sports middle finger inlays. This was his main axe through out the damaged justice tour. He retired this guitar right before the black album was recorded and he now uses as a recording guitar. He used the guitar to "warm up" for practice sessions during the recordings of Death Magnetic.

Solid Body Electric Guitars

ESP MX220 Explorer "EET FUK"

James’s first ESP, and one of this most recognizable guitars. He bought it just prior to recording “And Justice For All”, and used it as his main axe during that period. The guitar featured neck through body construction (as with all of James’ ESPs), with mahogany body and neck featuring rosewood fingerboard and custom middle finger inlays. The guitar was also equipped with a Tune-o-Matic bridge, Gotoh tuners, and EMG 81/60 active pickups.

Gibson Flying V

Avg price: $2,258.73

James uses a white gibson flying v (not his electra) during live shows, most notably during Metallica's song Battery.

In this video at 0:59 Hetfield can be seen with a Flying V in a Natural Finish.

This guitar appears to have had the Neck Pickup removed and its spot in the Pickguard taped over with Duct Tape, the controls appear to be modified and/or removed to accommodate this as well.

In this YouTube video at 2:01, James Hetfield can also be seen using a Gibson Flying V.

In a YouTube video titled "Metallica Phantom Lord Live at The Metro 1983," uploaded by 1MASTER1100, at the 0:02 mark, the camera provides a close-up of James Hetfield's guitar during a live performance on August 12th, 1983, at the Metro, Chicago, Illinois. The guitar's headstock appears red, suggesting it may be a variant of Hetfield's Gibson Flying V. Although it resembles the "Candy Apple Red" version, the Gibson Flying V Faded Cherry is a good match. According to wornfrets.com, Hetfield used an "Electra 2236 Flying Wedge," a Japanese clone of the Gibson Flying V, for the recording of "Kill 'em All" during this period; thus, the Gibson guitar was likely used exclusively for live performances.

Guitars used by Kirk Hammett on ...And Justice for All (Remastered)

Solid Body Electric Guitars

ESP 400 Series, Electric Guitar, J

Avg price: $1,395.00

As it can be seen on the "One" music video, Kirk used a ESP strat style. There is just a few information about this range of guitars, we know that the 400 Series guitars were manufactured in Japan during the 1980’s, the 400 Series were named for their suggested list price: $400.00.

The earlier batch of 6-string (400 Series) guitars had: Black & gold ESP decal on the headstock. 21 frets. ESP stamped on the saddles. The headstock had a ‘rounder’ profile than the later models.

The later models had: Solid black ESP decal. 22 frets. Blank (non-stamped) saddles. The headstock had a ‘sharper’ look/shape.

Drum Sets

Tama Artstar II 9 pieces LU Signature drum kit

The very first Tama LU signature live drum kit and his first maple. Built on a Tama Artstar II Maple 9mm / 8 plys Snow White with modifications such as Short Lugs from the Granstar series and in black like the rest of the hardware (lugs, hoops, stands, tom holder, etc.). It features 2 Bass Drums of 24x16 '', 4 Toms of 10x10 '', 12x11 '', 14x13 '' & 16x16 '', 2 Floors of 18x16 '' + a Brass Snare of 14x6.5 '' lacquered Snow White. Fully covered with Remo drumhead. Powerstroke 3 in Beater / Ambassador Ebony Resonant Pinstripe Clear in Beater / Ambassador Ebony Resonant on Toms & Floors, Coated Controled Reverse Reverse Sound in Beater / Ambassador Snare Clear Resonant for BB Snare. Cymbals all Zildjian with one of the best series, Zildjian A Brillant, 17 '' & 18 '' Medium Crashes on the left, 18 '', 17 '' & 16 '' Rock Crashes on the right. 2 Z Custom 14 '' Dyno Beat Hi-Hat (one on each side) and a 19 '' China Boy Low. 2 Pro-Beat HP45 pedals (pre-Power Glide) with traditional beater, Hi-Hat stand HH95NL Glide Lever, X-Hat HH95XH for Hi-Hat on the right and 6 cymbals double boom stands with counterweight Titan HC104. In 1992, Tama made 25 copies for the general public but only 23 will be available. Just the drum 9 pieces without stands, pedals, cymbals. It's really the metal drum kit of reference. The 2 '' gap between each Toms gives a better and bigger tone difference which is more pronounced, stands out more in a fill, an intro or Toms solo.... The video shown from Harvester Of Sorrow is great for hearing. The drum kit is well mixed, panned in stereo (as if we would sit in front) to distinguish the shells and cymbals to their respective sides (eg we can clearly hear the main Hi-Hat and Medium Crashes 17 '' & 18 '' on the right '' 80/20% '', the 2nd Hi-Hat, the 18 '', 17 '' & 16 '' Rock Crashes '' 20/80% '', the Floors '' 10/90%) left and Toms from right to left according to their% of their positions. Only the Bass Drum and the Snare is central. In addition, it is an excellent video to understand the sound of the drum and the sound of the drum is loud and clear. We hear everything and very well the super sounds of each piece.

Cymbals used by Lars Ulrich on ...And Justice for All (Remastered)

Hi-hat Cymbals

Sabian HH 15'' Rock Hats

Lars Ulrich has been known to prefer Sabian HH 15'' Rock Hats, particularly evident in the "Making of 'Atlas, Rise!'" video by Metallica on YouTube. He initially began using these hi-hats during the "And Justice for All" era, prominently featuring them in the "Black Album" sessions. Although he switched to Zildjian Z Custom 14'' Dyno-Beat Hats for "Death Magnetic," he returned to the Sabian 15'' hi-hats for "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct" in 2015-16. Notably, this period also marked his first use of Zildjian K cymbals as his primary crashes.
