Shing02 – Luv(Sic) Hexalogy [OMA and Shing02 Live at Liquidroom]

Featured in this September 21, 2012 Instagram post, which opens its caption with "my new toy". The VE-20 can be seen in use over eleven years later in the concert footage for Luv(sic) Hexalogy (OMA & Shing02 Live at Liquidroom)—which was recorded on March 9, 2024—at 13:54, 14:00, 16;49, and 22:07.

Shing02 has used an Oktava MK-319 on many recordings, including "Luv(sic)" and Uyama Hiroto's "South Side". It can be seen in Instagram posts dated June 21, 2012 and December 6, 2017, with another mention in the booklet that accompanies the physical release of Luv(sic) Hexalogy (released December 9, 2015).

Used to record "Luv(sic)", as recalled by Shing02 in the booklet that accompanies the physical release of Luv(sic) Hexalogy (released December 9, 2015) and in this ニートtokyo interview (released on December 28, 2019) at 3:34.

[A]nd at the time I lived in a small city called El Cerrito in north Berkeley and I still remember recording on Roland's [gestures the width of the VS] VS hard disc recorder at my studio at the house[...] and had my best friend Top Bill do the scratches for it[,] then sent those files to Japan[.]

Roland never released a VS-1640, but this can be understood as Shing02 combining the names of two VS models available at the time "Luv(sic)" was recorded, the VS-840 and the VS-1640. Both models were released in 1998, antedating the recording of "Luv(sic)" in late 2000 (per the Luv(sic) Hexalogy booklet (Japanese | English) and "Behind The Scenes of Luv(sic) Part 6 Remix Video Shoot - Part 1" at 2:13), but the VS-840EX followed in 1999, while the VS-840GX followed in 2000. Fortunately, Shing02's demonstrated width and the mention of digital files are indicative of the VS-1680.
