About

Amorphis is a Finnish metal band known for their innovative fusion of multiple genres, including progressive metal, melodic death metal, and folk metal. Formed in 1990 in Helsinki, the band was initially conceived by guitarist Esa Holopainen and drummer Jan Rechberger, later joined by vocalist and guitarist Tomi Koivusaari and bassist Olli-Pekka Laine. Over the years, Amorphis has expanded their lineup with the addition of keyboardist Santeri Kallio and vocalist Tomi Joutsen, both of whom have contributed significantly to the band's evolving soundscape. Amorphis is celebrated for their ability to blend heavy riffs with melodic and folk influences, resulting in a rich, dynamic sonic experience that often draws upon traditional Finnish themes and mythologies.

How to Sound Like Amorphis

Amorphis crafts a sound that is both epic and intricate, characterized by layered textures and dynamic contrasts. Their music often combines the heavy, distorted guitar work of Holopainen, using guitars like the ESP Eclipse-I CTM Black Satin, with lush, atmospheric keyboard layers courtesy of Kallio, utilizing instruments such as the Clavia Nord Wave. This creates a sound that is at once melodic and aggressive, with soaring vocals and growls from Joutsen adding depth and drama. The band frequently employs complex time signatures and folk-inspired melodies, allowing their music to feel both grounded and expansive. To emulate their style, a combination of versatile amplifiers like the Kemper Profiler Rack and expressive synths can help capture the expansive and emotive qualities that define Amorphis's sound.
