About
Shape of Despair is a Finnish doom metal band renowned for their deeply atmospheric and melancholic soundscapes. Formed in 1995 by guitarists T.U. (Tomi Ullgrén, rhythm guitar) and J.S. (Jarno Salomaa, lead guitar), the band also features Henri Koivula (vocals), Natalie Koskinen (clean vocals), Sami Uusitalo (bass), and Sameli Köykkä (drums). Initially known as Raven, they adopted the Shape of Despair name before releasing their early material, which blends elements of funeral doom, gothic metal, and atmospheric doom, drawing inspiration from bands like Paradise Lost and Anathema. Their music is characterized by its slow tempo, heavy guitar riffs, and the interplay between growling and clean vocals.
How to Sound Like Shape of Despair
Shape of Despair's sound is rooted in dense, reverb-laden guitar tones that create a vast, enveloping sonic experience. The band's music is melodic yet crushingly heavy, with a focus on building expansive, melancholic atmospheres. The use of synthesizers and violins adds layers of depth and texture, enhancing their signature sound. Marshall JCM2000 TSL 100 amplifiers, known for their powerful, saturated tones, are instrumental in crafting their monumental guitar presence. The drums and bass work in tandem to provide a solid yet understated foundation that supports the band's ethereal and haunting compositions, while the dual vocal approach brings a dynamic range to their music.
