About

Angry Samoans is a seminal hardcore punk band hailing from Van Nuys, California. Formed in 1978, the group was initially comprised of founding members "Metal" Mike Saunders (vocals, guitar), Gregg Turner (vocals, guitar), Todd Homer (bass), and Bill Vockeroth (drums). Their music is characterized by a raw, raucous energy that embodies the early Los Angeles punk scene, with influences drawn from proto-punk and garage rock. Known for their satirical lyrics and irreverent attitude, Angry Samoans gained recognition alongside acts like X and Black Flag, leaving a lasting mark on the punk genre with releases like Inside My Brain and Back from Samoa.

How to Sound Like Angry Samoans

To capture the aggressive and unrefined sonic character of Angry Samoans, musicians should focus on creating a sound that is both raw and energetic. The band’s music often features fast-paced, distorted guitar riffs and simple, yet driving bass lines, reminiscent of classic punk rock's frenetic pace. Utilizing overdriven tube amps and fuzz pedals can help achieve the biting, gritty tone that defines their guitar work. The drums are typically played with high intensity and minimalistic fills, emphasizing speed and power to maintain the relentless momentum that is a hallmark of their sound. Incorporating short, punchy songs with straightforward structures will also help in emulating their chaotic and rebellious style.
