About
Government Issue was a seminal band in the Washington, D.C., hardcore scene, renowned for their energetic fusion of hardcore punk, skate punk, and punk. Formed in 1981, the group initially consisted of John Stabb (vocals), Marc Alberstadt (drums), John Barry (guitar), and Brian Gay (bass). Over their nine-year existence, Government Issue experienced numerous lineup changes, with key members including Brian Baker (guitar) and Tom Lyle (bass, later guitar). Notable for their evolving sound, the band transitioned from traditional hardcore roots to incorporate elements of metal, new wave pop, and psychedelia, making them a distinctive voice in the D.C. punk landscape.
How to Sound Like Government Issue
Government Issue's sound is characterized by aggressive, raw energy and dynamic musical exploration. Early recordings reflect a fast-paced, gritty hardcore punk aesthetic, often driven by distorted guitar riffs and pounding drum rhythms. As the band evolved, they began to incorporate more melodic and experimental elements, creating a richer sonic tapestry. Anchoring their sound, Brian Baker's use of guitars like the Gibson SG Standard '61 and Gibson Les Paul Custom, paired with powerful amplification from the Marshall JCM800 2203, provided a thick, robust tone. The MXR M169 Carbon Copy delay pedal added depth and texture, allowing their music to shift from straightforward punk aggression to more layered and nuanced compositions.
