About
Antibalas is a dynamic Afrobeat ensemble that emerged from the vibrant Brooklyn music scene in 1998. Founded by saxophonist Martín Perna, the group initially came together as a neighborhood dance and protest band, eventually growing into a celebrated force in global music. The band has seen contributions from a variety of talented musicians over the years, including members of the Dap Kings like bassist/producer Gabriel Roth, guitarist Binky Griptite, and keyboardist Victor Axelrod. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Duke Amayo became a central figure in the group, leading them through numerous performances worldwide. Known for their compelling blend of Afrobeat, afro soul, and Latin influences, Antibalas continues to invigorate audiences with their high-energy performances and socially conscious messages.
How to Sound Like Antibalas
Antibalas’s sound is a rich tapestry of percussive rhythms and vibrant horn sections, creating a sonic landscape that is both rhythmic and melodic. Their music thrives on the intricate interplay between bass-heavy grooves and brass-driven melodies, establishing a sound that is both earthy and expansive. The use of instruments like the Fender Precision Bass and Ampeg SVT-810E 8x10 Bass Cabinet helps to deliver the deep, resonant bass tones that are essential to their Afrobeat roots. Meanwhile, the dynamic brass arrangements are accentuated by analog warmth, often captured using gear like the Shure SM57. This combination of rhythmic depth and melodic richness creates a sound that is both invigorating and immersive, embodying the spirit of traditional Afrobeat while embracing contemporary influences.
