About
Anvil is a Canadian heavy metal band hailing from Toronto, known for their influential role in shaping the speed and thrash metal genres. Formed in 1978 by childhood friends Steve "Lips" Kudlow (vocals, guitar) and Robb Reiner (drums), the band's lineup initially included Ian Dickson (bass) and Dave Allison (rhythm guitar). They gained early recognition with albums like Metal on Metal and Forged in Fire, which showcased their fast-paced, aggressive sound that pushed the boundaries of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Despite facing challenges throughout their career, Anvil has remained a steadfast presence in the metal scene, continuously recording and touring.
How to Sound Like Anvil
Anvil's sound is characterized by its raw, aggressive energy and technical precision, driven by Kudlow's powerful guitar riffs and Reiner's pioneering double bass drumming. Their music often features thunderous, distorted guitar tones achieved through instruments like Kudlow's 67 Gibson Flying V w/ Maestro vibrola and Epiphone SG G-400, paired with the iconic Marshall JCM800 amplifier. This combination delivers a dense, driving sound that captures the essence of their metal roots. Anvil's music is further defined by its tight, rhythmic precision, with fast-paced tempos and intricate drum patterns that create a relentless sonic assault, making their style both intense and exhilarating for metal enthusiasts.
